Suggestions for short stay in NYC

D will be in New York city on a one week internship during her Spring Break in March. We live in the midwest and are completely unfamiliar with the city. Would appreciate suggestions for a reasonably priced, safe place to stay. Thanks.

This thread may be helpful.

We have enjoyed the Warwick. It's near 53rd Street and Avenue of the Americas, if I remember right. Great location (although it depends on where your D will be interning), reasonable price and the rooms are good-sized.

She will probably want to stay somewhere near her internship or at least where it's easily accessible by subway. Depending on whether it's downtown or uptown, you might look at NYU and Columbia websites in their sections for visitors. I know that Columbia lists a bunch of hotels in various price ranges, and I'd guess NYU does as well.

Thank you for your suggestions. In the end, D has decided to spend the week on a friend's couch. In the meantime, I came up with interesting options. including residences for "young professional women."

Should you change your mind and choose that last option, make sure you know which profession they have in mind.

You've echoed my husband's words. Especially when he found out that it cost $75/day for a single room with an attached bath. Its outrageously cheap for Manhatten. They are run by the Salvation Army. I am relieved that we have a better option.

Actually those Salvation Army residences used to be very respectable and probably still are; there was a time whwen new York had sevearl other women-only residences, but they are gone.

For a young woman first time alone in NYC, friend's couch sounds to me like the safest option.
