suggestions for transfer?

I'm a student going into my sophomore year of high school. I have great academics and extracurriculars. I currently attend a public school in nassau county but am looking to enroll in a much more rigerous day school with good matriculation and good sports programs, preferably on long island. My current high school doesn't have any ivy league schools attend their college fair. My parent's won't let me attend a boarding school so a day school seems to be my only choice. Any suggestions of places to look into?

Thanks!!

If you are willing to look at schools outside of Long Island, you could consider Hackley and Rye Country Day in Westchester. There are also a ton of great private schools in NYC.

Thanks! Do you know the names of any of the best private schools in nyc by any chance?

Horace Mann is an excellent school as well

No suggestions except to do some research of independent secondary schools on Search for Colleges and Universities, Graduate Schools, Online Degree, Private Schools - Peterson's. If you are close to Stony Brook, you might take a look at this school which is both boarding and day The Stony Brook School | A Private Boarding School

Chapin, Spence, Dalton, Horace Mann, and Riverdale are some of the best.

Unfortunately, unless you're willing to make the commute into NYC (for Chapin, etc. -- and Horace Mann takes as long to get to in the outskirts of Long Island), there really are no schools on Long Island on par with these elite NYC schools, or the top boarding schools (which is why we made the decision for BS for my S). Probably the best out there in Nassau county is Friends Academy; they seem very willing to adapt a curriculum according to a students level and needs, but not sure if their sports are highly competitive. The NYC schools that Jonathan mentioned are all excellent, but the question is whether you want to spend 4 hours a day commuting.....pm me if you want. We've explored all of these options!!

I agree about Friends. I had a friend attend there and love it. Also, if you do want the commute, Chapin, Collegiate, Brearely, Riverdale, Spence, Dalton, and oh, i feel like there's another one I'm forgetting one...are all excellent.

I would immediately cross off the schools Jonathan listed... they're great schools, but the commute is downright unreasonable for high school. If you're not driving age, the only way I can see it is arduous -- LIRR to Penn Station, switching subwayS to get to Grand Central to take the Metro North to either Rye or Tarrytown and from the station dealing with what? a taxi? One way would take at least two hours and the cost would escalate. And if you are driving age, the traffic would be miserable. Unless there's alternatives I can't think of.

As for LI private schools-- I'm agreeing with everyone else really, Friends Academy. Another option that's obviously not going to get thrown around in this forum, but is a very strong choice -- pay out of district to attend a different, more competitive public high school in Nassau County. There are TONS of great high schools out there, many of which have great sports programs and great ivy/comparable top tier placements (I graduated from Duke, and in retrospect, all my friends from LI attended public school). It's definitely an option worth exploring and considering. Oh, wait, completely forgetting about Hewlett School - I have no idea where it is in LI, just that I know a few people who went there, loved it, and then went onto Duke. But, if you're thinking of NYC, I'm sure even if its in Suffolk County, the commute would still be easier.

As for NYC schools, based on the commute, it'd probably be easier to look at schools in Manhattan proper as opposed to other boroughs (eliminating Horace Mann, Fieldston, Riverdale Country Day). For co-ed: Trinity School, Dalton, York. All Girls: Chapin, Spence, Brearley, Bamford etc etc...

Chapin is an excellent school. I have heard many good things about it, and have family who have attended. If you're a girl it is a great option, and you will still have many opportunities to mingle with the opposite sex.

Long Island Lutheran in Brookville.

Don't know much but have heard good things from two LI friends...

Rye Country Day is extremely hard to get into, at least for my age group. If I were you, I would look at Hackley, Horace Mann, Dalton, and Columbia Grammar
