Suggestions for Transferring

Hello everyone,

I am currently an out of state freshman at UNC-Chapel Hill and I feel as if I am in a living hell. I came from a small, private, conservative school in Charleston, SC where community was of utmost importance. After I arrived at UNC, I noticed none of that. Moreover, I noticed that the majority of students came in with their cliques from high school. After numerous discussions on the forums of college discussions, my parents, and others, I have made an initial decision to consider transfer options. Maybe I haven't given it enough time, but I have yet to make a meaningful friendship while I've been here. I've experienced an environment that is closed to anyone who doesn't know someone. I came here alone and I knew no one at UNC. I miss the community feel. I got a bid for a fraternity, but i can't say I want to join knowing that those guys are going to be my only hope here. There is no community. I am also a tenetive political science major, as I am interested in going to law school, and I am constantly being insulted each day by the horrendous bias that the professors teach with. A day doesn't go by that some knock on conservatives occurs--even going as far as insulting Christianity because we don't think homosexuality is right. I realize liberalness is common on college campuses, but what I've experienced here is worse than my friends at American, Cornell, Dartmouth, etc.. have heard.

My first choice was Wake Forest, as I grew up in love with the school, which continues to this day. However, I got waitlisted and found out in July that no one would be moved off of it. My question is about which schools should I consider as a transfer option that wouldn't be below UNC-CH on an academic level. I'll try Wake Forest again most likely, as I've visited friends there and I still would love to go there. I'm mainly looking for a smaller school than UNC in the southeast preferably, but i can consider going north. I'm looking to go into law school, specifically corporate law, and a school with a strong poli sci department would be great.

So far, I've only really thought about wake and maybe emory in atlanta. but wake would really be ideal. if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

I am not solid on the idea of leaving UNC, but right now, despite all the efforts i make, people are simply sticking with who they know or people from their home town. It's frustrating .. and I never experienced a time here where everyone was knew and looking at meeting new people. I dont normally have trouble making friends, and I'm incredibly lonely here.

Ahduke: Other people know more about you and about UNC than I do, so I'm not going to give you any advice about whether or where to transfer. But even if you do seek to transfer and are able to do so, you need to do some things for yourself while you're there at UNC.

It's sad to hear that, with all the new opportunities to explore things at college, people are still sticking with their high school associations. I suspect that will drop off pretty soon as friends start going off in different directions, but you still need to do things in the meantime.

If students are sticking with high school associations, you need to look for students who don't have them - out-of-state or international students or perhaps some who come from very small towns and feel lost in a big campus.
If you haven't been doing so, you need to look around campus for church services and Christian groups that you can connect with, and clubs that you can join to get into a new group of people with a common interest or to try out a new one. And then, once you have gotten some sort of a base group so that you feel comfortable, you need to expand your experiences to people who don't think or act the way you do - because one of the great benefits (and also challenges) of college is to be able to relate to people who are different from you, who don't think the way you do - which you will have to learn to do once you get into the working world. Who knows but you may even change your plan to transfer.

And one more thing - just for some fun (I hope) - listen to the famous Alan Sherman song "A Letter from Camp Granada".

Good luck with it all.

I think you should definitely apply to Wake..I love that school, ive visited many times, you will like the conservative environment as well as the size. I am a bit surprised you got into UNC OOS and WL at Wake, but those things do happen. I consider Wake to be a better undergrad school than UNC, and there are considerably more people from OOS (most from the Northeast). How do you think you are doing GPA wise so far at UNC?

i really havent had many tests, although my classes seem easy, the teachers are making the tests incredibly difficult. one class, US GOV, is easy, but the tests are just on how well i can memorize the ny times. i have an A in english, so that's fine.

i do love wake, so much so that i wear my wake clothes even on UNC's campus. i just need to keep my GPA up so i will be a viable candidate. there may be one class i'm not doing too well in, but i have plenty of time to bring it up before the end of the semester.
