Suggestions for west coast colleges with Softball and BSN

I have a friend whose DD wants to major in Nursing, with an eye towards a BSN. She is also a very good softball player who is hoping for a partial scholarship for softball.

She will be graduating in 2009. Grades (UW) are in the 3.3-3.5 range. I don't know about SAT scores. I would think a middle of the road college e.g. she is unlikely to get into a top academic school.

Any suggestions for my friend's DD??

Here is a list of NCAA Div I schools that offer softball. Div I schools are the ones that offer athletic scholarships.

NCAA Sports Sponsorship

Check out schools from the Big West conference, the Pacific Coast Softball conference, the Western Athletic Conference, Mountain West Conference and the Pacific 10 conference. Many of the schools offer nursing.

In the Pac-10, check out Arizona State, Washington State and Oregon State. I think her grades would probably be in line for admissions to those schools.

I talked with the daughter a little more tonight and got a little more clarity.

What she is having a hard time finding is schools that offer the BSN - and where you are accepted directly into the nursing program as a freshman rather than after two years. She feels that playing a sport would make it difficult to maintain the types of grades she would need in her freshman and sophomore years to make it into the programs that defer admission. She indicated that it was somewhat like medical school extremely competitive.

As for softball, she stated that she is not really a D1 level player - certainly not in the Pac 10 level - perhaps in a smaller D1 or more likely a D2 or D3.

Appreciate the suggestions

Whitworth U in Spokane offers a BSN through the Intercollegiate (Washington State, Eastern Washington and Whitworth) Nursing program. Whitworth also has softball – D3 (I think). Although, your D would need to apply after two years of pre-nursing courses, I’ve heard most Whitworth pre-nursing students tend to make the cut. You should contact their admissions office and ask what % of pre-nursing students who apply to Intercollegiate are actually accepted and graduate.

Does she realize there are no sports scholarships at DIII schools? If she's not that good a player maybe it's time to give up softball and focus on her studies. She could probably play intramural and keep it fun and the commitment at a reasonable level.

What about U Va? I'm not sure, but it seemed to me that they accepted freshman into the college of nursing. I could be wrong, though! Check it out at any rate.

Thank you for all of the suggestions - I have passed them on... Whitworth in particular was one that she was not aware of. Last time I spoke with her, she was on the website checking it out!!!

More suggestions welcome...

Not high on the academic list but Montana State University in Billings has a program very similar to Whitworth and the nursing program is affiliated with Montana State University in Bozeman.

They are D2 Softball and do well at that level.

Seattle University might be another D2 softball school with nursing to look into.

Linfield may be an option too in Oregon.
