After submitting our FAFSA application online, there were information that were unclear to us before. After asking several people and verifying our situation, we know the answer. To make the long story short, my husband and I do not qualify for automatic 0 EFC. I'm going to see the FA at the school on Monday to inform her of all the corrections, at the same time, ask her any questions that I have. I called the office last Tuesday to ask if I make the corrections myself online or just tell the FA and let her do the corrections. I was confused what he was talking about. He was telling me at first to do the corrections online, then tell the advisor, blah! blah! I've made a couple of corrections on the FAFSA before...such as our asset information (that part was not asked when I first filled out our FAFSA, so I had to go back to add that information. Back then, I was clueless as to what the criteria is for 0 EFC and if I do fall into the criteria as a dislocated worker.) Apparently, I've been given bad advises from my friends and sister-in-law (until I joined this forum...a lot of you have shed light to my FAFSA ignorance).

So, will it be advisable that I do make a correction online on our FAFSA or just leave it be? Like I said, I've made a couple of corrections before already (I haven't touched the income area...the questions that I edited is the part where it asked about the elligibility to file 1040A, etc.... and I wasn't very sure about that). Some of my friends told me that I screwed up because I made those corrections...and all I ever did was to make sure that the information I've given is 100% correct. So, I'm asking your expert opinions on here. Should I just leave our online FAFSA be? Or should I make those said corrections so they will know we're honest enough to correct it ourselves?

Thank you very much in advance! Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!! :-)

You should definitely make the corrections now. Then you will have a good idea of what FA/merit aid might be available. Otherwise you might make a decision based on a bad estimate.

Since you are going to see the FA advisor Monday, you can just wait until then. Don’t worry about seeming honest or dishonest … you were confused, and you are trying to straighten things out. The FA advisor may tell you he/she will make the changes, or you may be asked to do the changes yourself. It’s only a couple days, so you can just wait.

Yes, we’ve been selected for verification. I’ll just bring all our necessary papers. They just asked for the 2008 tax return…would it be wise to also provide our latest bank statements and investment statements, etc…? Will they be needing those documents as well? I’m just curious. I just want to make sure I won’t be caught empty handed with those when they do ask.

You can bring those those things, but do not offer them unless they are requested. Most likely, you won’t be asked for any info regarding investments. What you will need is your tax return, all supporting schedules, possibly your 1099s (we don’t ask for these, but some schools do), your W2s, and a completed verification worksheet. Do not make any changes to your FAFSA now, because the FAO will do any required changes during verification - just let the FAO know your situation with respect to the dislocated worker issue.

kelsmom, thank you. I won’t touch our FAFSA until I see the FA on Monday morning. My husband only has 1040 and the other attached schedules with it (Schedule C, D, etc…). I think it’s easier if I’ll print out the original SAR basing on the first application (before I made any corrections), and just highlight the information that need to be corrected. My husband and I pretty much have the same information on both of our FAFSA applications, so I’ll do the same for him. He just won’t be able to meet with the FA because he can’t take off of work.

We can fill out FAFSA already? I thought they opened up in January. So far, I printed out the FAFSA workbook and signed up for a pin number… [no idea how that’ll confirm though. They said we choose between email/mail but they never told me]. =/

FAFSA for 2010-2011 is not available until January 1st. The poster is applying for aid for the spring which is still part of the 2009-2010 school year.

Star, neither I nor my kids have ever gotten a confirmation for our PINs. Not email or mail. We’ve filed for 2 years so far and it’s never been a problem. Same is true for a couple other people I know. Not sure why.

Star, you can go to [The PIN Web Site - Federal Student Aid](http://www.pin.ed.gov), select Request a Duplicate PIN … this option shows your PIN … you can assume it’s all set if you see the PIN.
