Hi,

I'm currently a junior majoring in Health Care Management which is in the business school. I've been having some 2nd thoughts about the major lately...I'm not really sure if it's definitely what I want to do, but I don't think there's another major that I'm more in love with. I really wish I could double major within the business school, but that isn't allowed. anyway, I've been considering switching to MIS (Management Information Systems). I like working with computers, and I feel like health care just might be too specific and I might have more opportunities. I've also considered accounting, although that would be harder to switch to at this point. And I'm pretty sure I don't want to do finance, although that's a possibility too.

Sorry this is very vague, but does anyone have any advice? I first picked Health Care because I wanted to really help people and it seemed like a good field. Any comments are appreciated, thanks!

Accounting will provide you more opportunities in private industry/business than any other degree, and you will actually have an edge over Finance majors for finance jobs too. But as you said, it would be harder to switch, would be much more difficult classes, and it wouldn’t be a good start to an IT career without IT courses/skills to go along with it. If you don’t have an actual interest in accounting as a subject, it will require very strong discipline to make it through. That is one of the reasons the major is so attractive to employers.

I do not have knowledge about the Health Care industry or that major. I would recommend researching the opportunities for that major in more detail, if you have not already. I am not saying it is one, but it may potentially be a “fluff” major that just gets you a secretarial job in a hospital. It may not however, I do not personally know. However, I do know that next to Accounting (people say Accounting is over-satured, when in reality it is over-satured with low-GPA accounting majors, but high-GPA accounting majors are still in huge demand), Management Information Systems is the most in-demand business major right now and has a higher average starting salary than any other business major, including Accounting.

As for figuring out what you want to do, you just have to pick a career you want to try first, make sure your major is hired into that career by employers, and take a shot at it. No one really knows if they will truly like a career/field until they have tried it. Internship(s) sometimes helps you find out earlier, but sometimes even those don’t give you enough feel for the career.

I would think that MIS would be harder to switch into than accounting considering the computer background you would need. Anyways, I think MIS and accounting are both the best paths you can take. You can easily work in the health care management field with an MIS or accounting degree, although I believe accounting would probably suit that path better. And god forbid you take an extra semester or two to finish your degree. Trust me, the world’s not gonna stop spinning on its axis (knock on wood) because you don’t graduate in exactly 4 years.
