Suggestions on Dealing with LG contribution

The school that gave me the best aid also is seeking a 13k contribution from my legal guardian who doesn't have it even according to her tax return. She made 70k gross with 50k net income (after mortgage interest and taxes deductions) and they are asking for a good portion of what she lives on. She has no savings or assets (her house is underwater).

I want to point out the realities of the tax return without even bringing in the non-responsibility of a legal guardian but this is the school I want to attend so I do not want to offend them. Any hints on how to go about this? Should I write or my LG or make an appointment for admitted students day? Thanks for all/any help.

You need to pick up the phone and call them, and talk with them about this. They are not going to pull your admission if you question them. However, the simple truth may be that this is the best offer that they can make, and instead of giving you a package full of unattainable private loans, they decided to “pass” the bill on to your LG. This is essentially an admit-deny situation. If you read through some of the other threads in this forum, you will find other students whose aid packages consist entirely of Parent Plus loans!

Yes, this is the place that you really want to attend, but if it is not going to become fully affordable, you are going to have to be able to walk away from their bad offer. There are affordable options out there. It is time for you to look around for a Plan B for yourself.

Their offer is good but I need to understand how they assigned this much contribution to someone who is basically responsible for nothing and doesn’t have what they are asking for. I can make a lot of it up in loans but I just don’t know the best way to go about talking to them about it.

Just ask them. Chances are that you need to speak with the head of financial aid, not with whoever it is who answers the phone. That person may not understand that an LG is not a parent.
