Anyone have any suggestions on where to stay in the area. Going in beginning of July for D's advising day. Right now we are staying at the Hampton Inn. They said its about 1 mile from campus. Do you think we can walk it, or is it too far from where we have to go? Also is there ample parking on campus on these kind of days? Any suggestions?

When we visited the school last November we stayed at the Days Inn. I would recommend it. Very nice atmosphere and very close to campus. We're going down next week for my advising day.

there is parking on campus. the HUB is probably the closest though you have to pay $1 an hour for it. you can also park way out by the Bryce Jordan Center and take a campus bus in to where you need to be.

we just went for the FTCAP day and stayed right near the Hampton Inn. You'll be fine there. In the AM just drive onto campus and park in the HUB garage. I think it cost us $7 for the day. It's right near the Thomas Bldg which is where you have to go. It's a long day....we got out around 3:30

Between visiting our son and volleyball tournaments, we've stayed at nearly every hotel in State College. My top recommendation is the beautiful Nittany Lion Inn. It's conveniently located on the NW corner of the Penn State campus, so you can park your car and walk everywhere. I don't know if you can still do it, but the Nittany Lion used to give a discount to families coming up for advising. Just ask them for the discount when you call.

My second choice would be the Atherton Hotel. It's located downtown and has just undergone a major renovation. Again, you can park your car and walk everywhere. IMHO, it's a step above the Days Inn and possibly less expensive (it used to be, anyway.)

You'll have a long walk to campus from the Hampton Inn.

Nittany Lion Inn, definitely. I'm not sure how much Hampton Inn is, but the Nittany Lion Inn I'm guessing isn't too much more... it cost 3 people to stay in a double room on short notice a little over $100, for a ballpark estimate. It's a very nice hotel and is within walking distance of everything. Fairly convenient parking, too.

Also have heard the Atherton Inn is good, as well. Not sure about pricing for there and never been there personally.

There are a ton of hotels in the area to choose from (but they do fill up quickly for PSU events). I always use lioncountrylodging.com to plan my trips up to Happy Valley. They have several lodging options that are convenient and very enjoyable.

It is nice to be able to park the car and walk when you visit State College. The Hampton Inn would not be the best place to do that; it is on a busy road just outside of downtown and I’m not sure if there are even sidewalks there. The other hotels mentioned would all be better if you like to walk.

smh, you can’t walk from the Hampton Inn, although it is super easy to find. Nittany Lion Inn and Atherton Hotel are best location but prob the most expensive and first to fill up. If you aren’t going to stay on campus, The Ramada Inn on S. Atherton is very nice (but nowhere near campus) Never count on parking at the HUB garage! If you want to park downtown, try the Heister Street lot – cheap, and usually there are some spots. Across the street from Baby’s, which is a fun place to eat, as well. But if it were me, I’d stay at the Nittany Lion Inn.

We used the Fairfield Inn twice and were very pleased with it. You would need to drive to campus from there. Penn State should be able to advise you regarding the best place to park on campus.

We stayed at the Nittany Lion Inn for FTCAP. We flew in and the were picked up from the airport and they even took us to/from the Band facility. For the initial move-in day, we stayed (I think) at the Days Inn (Pugh Street, 4-5 blocks up from College). We drove, parked, and with the exception of actually moving DS in, walked everywhere.

For those times when DS had to fly in a day early (end of Thanksgiving, Xmas, Spring breaks), we have always had him spend the night at the Nittany Lion Inn. Again, they picked him up at the airport and then dropped him off at his dorm the next day. Perhaps a bit more than other places, but I liked knowing he was on campus and they took excellent care of him.

(Note: I think Atherton Hotel was being renovated when we first went up there, because I could never get an answer on the phone)
