Hello! S3, a rising senior, is excited about possibly attending FSU. What should he work on over the next few months to enhance his application? What are his chances? Should he apply as soon as the app comes out or wait until stats improve a little?

Here is an outline of his stats so far:
SAT I : M600, V530, W500 (taken twice)
GPA: approx. 3.5w (rising trend), mostly honors courses, 1 AP in senior year
ECs: Varsity sport (captain), some volunteer work, part-time job as lifeguard and swim instructor, 2 clubs (VP in one), music

Plans to take ACT in June, but doesn't seem interested in preparing ; )
Thanks!

How about a SAT/ACT prep course?

Apply early, apply early...

How about a trip to FSU so S3 could see the university and speak with Admissions?

Might want to try the ACT instead of the SAT this time. Some students do a lot better on a different style of exam.
Make sure to keep his grades up for first semester so he could show even more improvement mid-year in case he is wait-listed.
Maybe he could take a community college course or two over the summer to show he is ready for college level work and get some credits under his belt.

Thanks parent2noles and cybermom! Great suggestions. About how much higher should his SATs be, given his gpa? I suspect he can get the math up a little higher, but the verbal score will be tougher. What ACT score are we shooting for...within reason, of course ; )

Also, if he applies in August he won't have a third SAT score yet. Should he wait to apply or should he apply and send the results from his fall test once they're released...hoping they'll look at them?

We can't say for certain - the new stats won't be out until later in the year.

These would be questions you'd want to cover with Admissions.

I still think he should apply early and send in new test results when they arrive. I think he has a good chance of summer acceptance with his current grades and scores. I would like to see closer to a 3.75+ WGPA and/or closer to a 1200 SAT to feel absolutely confident of fall admission. His ECs look excellent. Good luck!

I spoke to the admissions department on thursday. i was told that the 2007 freshman profile is

Mid 50%

SAT 1200
ACT 26
GPA 3.75

hope this helps. the admin rep told me it was the strongest profile they have ever had. my son also plans to apply this summer/fall.

dreamer 88, these numbers do not mean that your son will get rejected based upon his current profile. it is just a measure of the mid 50%. I am sure they look at the essay, ec's and all the other stuff that makes your son a strong candidate.

good luck.

The previous average SAT was 1206 and it was the strongest average class so far. They also received 30,000 applications (a record, I believe) and the admissions rate fell to probably some 46%.

Each year so far since about 2004 (or earlier) is "the strongest class".
