My friend’s daughter, a freshman at Tulane, told her that someone in her dorm hanged himself the first week of school. We are horrified—does anyone know anything about this? Thanks.
Your friend’s daughter attends Tulane, and lives in the same dorm as someone who committed suicide? If this is true, there may be a crisis team at Tulane who is there to respond to students affected by such events.
At my daughter’s college, when she was a sophomore there was an attempted suicide in her dorm. After the student’s needs were addressed and the ambulance took him away to emergency medical services, there were counselors from the student counseling services who went door to door checking on the other students in the dorm and offering support to anyone who felt affected by the incident. They also provided information about resources in the event of a delayed reaction. As a mental health professional I was pretty impressed with this response.
That is so sad that it is true. My heart goes out to his family.
Terribly tragic for a family that has already suffered so much. The student’s father was killed four years ago in a freak commuter train accident:

Yes it is true, my daughter is a freshman at Tulane. I heard there were counselors in the dorm and they have posted tons of information of where to get additional help including a 24/7 phone number. It is such a sad situation I can’t even imagine how the family is feeling. Jake’s mom asked for donations be sent to the Jed Foundation.
My condolences to his family. I was widowed when my son was 10. It’s incredibly devastating to young men to lose their father. My son still sometimes has existential issues over a decade later. Those issues tend to show up during stressful times, like starting a new chapter of his life.
That link doesnt work, @MaineLonghorn
What an awful, heart wrenching story. His poor, poor mother. Breaks my heart.
