That'd be a pretty sick joke.

William and Mary has the highest in the country.

that's a myth, until you can provide stats to back it up. There were a couple last year though, local news was all over it...

I thought Cornell's suicide rates were less than the national average, and many of those who commit suicide there arnt students.

Yeah I've heard (from a guy who went to Cornell) that most often it's actually alumni who come back and get really depressed or something.

edit Despite what that article suggests, less biased sources reported at the time that she did indeed set herself on fire.

Just as a note, once you correct for MIT's small size and its historically large number of males (who are more likely to successfully commit suicide than females), its suicide rate becomes consistent with the national average for college students.

NYU has had several suicides within the past couple of years

"Apparently Cornell has a bridge which students tend to jump off."

lol, students don't tend to jump off it...that would suggest that once a week, the students venture to said bridge and some tend to jump off...

someone fell in last year by accident, I think he was drunk

Honestly, unless your mentally unstable or you have diarrhea during the MCATs, there's no reason why you should even contemplate suicide. Remember, grades aren't everything (well they kind of are, but don't jump!)

I don't really know really know how to respond to this uber-insightful comment. I can't decide if it's insulting or hilarious.

I'd say neither. It's more along the lines of mildly funny.

NYU has had several suicides within the past couple of years

it's true. mainly becauseof the lack of unity in the campus

Cornell University is one peer institution that does maintain moderately complete records of their student deaths in response to a common perception that they have a high suicide rate. Cornell had eight students take their own lives in the past ten years. With about 19,000 students on campus, Cornell has a suicide rate of about 4.3 per 100,000 student years for that time period, far below both MIT and national rates.

MIT does have the highest suicide rate in the country. I just checked it up.

A media focus on Cornell

Hmm, I wasn't aware.

I just saw a NY Times article on Cornell saving dogs that was given bad dog food or something. Being in NY and being a big university, there are always lots of stories.

Seems to me when my high school visited Cornell 2 years ago there wasn't really a way you could "fall off" that bridge by accident.. mainly only if you climbed over it and jumped in. Of course I guess if you're sitting on it and get pushed...well, that would suck!
I still find that surprising though. IMO Cornell has the prettiest campus and best overall vibe out of all the colleges I've visited so far.

MIT also has the highest setting yourself on fire rate among US colleges and universities over the last 5 years.

it'd be pretty hard to fall off the suspension bridge at Cornell. You'd actually have to climb up and then jump over.

One kid found his way into the gorge last year. But yeah, he was drunk and it was an accident. There's a cross near the waterfall where they found him a week later.

Nasty Cornell suicide story, a few years ago a kid hung himself in a tree near one of the gorges. People thought he went missing since nobody was found at the bottom of the gorge. His body was found a solid 6 months later semi-preserved from the cold of winter. Ick!!!

cindy013, there are more gorges/bridges than just the ones you saw, and it's very easy to see how a drunk (or even clumsy/reckless sober person) might accidentally fall into some...
