Do you usually wear a full suit (i.e. shirt tie jacket) to your local sci fair that if you win you can go to ISEF? Or just a shirt/tie. Basically, what I'm asking is do you think it is BAD to wear a suit slash will they think I am overdressed (the judges that is)??

Don't overdress. When I went to my science fair I wore some dress shoes, slacks, and a shirt/tie (simple tie). I didn't win overall, but I recieved first in my category.

I've judged at local, district, and state science fairs. Clean and covered is all that is necessary. You don't even need to wear a tie. Many I've judged have worn polo shirts and jeans. Even rumpled doesn't faze me. I can't recall a young man whose attire at science fair seemed inappropriate.

Young ladies are another matter. Expose your shoulders, decolletage, and tummies at the prom if you like. At science fair, you should dress more appropriately. (Young men shouldn't expose those things, either, but that has never been a problem.)

In any case, though, your appearance doesn't affect your score. Judges know that students come from many different backgrounds. Some students' families can't afford to buy that shirt and tie, much less a suit.

I agree with EllenF. We just had our county-wide science fair here in Silicon Valley, and students mostly wore their normal school clothes, with a few wearing business casual or business formal wear. Since the judging on day two was from 2 - 6 p.m., many students simply came directly from school in their normal school clothes.

As long as you are dressed cleanly, no shorts, beach wear, dirty, ragged or hoochie wear, judges will be fine with you. I personally think that business casual or business formal might help you stand out from the crowd, but it's your call.

The Synopsys Silicon Valley Science Fair attracts 700+ 6th-12th graders. Good luck with your science project!

I live in Ohio, and I concur with all being said...guys tend to wear khakis and button-down shirts (sometimes with ties), while girls go for the skirts and nice tops.

It was funny, though, all the kids from my school (save one) happened to show up at the district science fair with black suits, even us girls. We hadn't even planned it.

We won a school award, and when we all went up there, we looked like such a mafia. :) People did comment though, and said that they liked the professional look. I'd say if you owned a suit and felt comfortable in it, by all means, wear it. It won't hurt.
