I am looking at applying to University of Wisconsin - Madison for FALL 08. How easy is it to get a suite as a freshman?

Apply for dorms right away. Then it's luck. There are lots of other options--private dorms, swanky apts, etc next to campus.

Only the 2 newest dorms have suite style rooms instead of down the hall bathrooms- don't use this as your criteria for choosing a college. From what I read on the parents' forum many good colleges have tiny dorm rooms, etc. At UW typically half of the available spots for each dorm are reserved for freshmen, you must put down a refundable deposit shortly after being accepted to UW. In the spring everyone gives Res Halls their final ranking of dorms and the computer randomly chooses who's first on the list for getting first choice, etc. (some schools base the first choice on date of application to the dorms, UW Residence Halls doesn't favor the Sept. applicants over the January ones).
