Sumac 2011

Let's start a thread for SUMAC 2011.

Did anyone apply?

I applied and have not received the email yet that they said we were to receive by today. Has anyone else received theirs? I am getting kinda worried…

parags3, I did receive it today. They sent me the email about five hours ago, and said that they got my application. Maybe you want to double-check your mailbox?
In the email, they also said that there is “a large number of apps this year,” so I am somewhat worried about it.

Yes. I also received the confirmation today.

According to the program description, there were approximately one fourth applicants who get accepted. Is this ratio, compared to those of similar programs (Ross, PROMYS, etc.) high or low?

Have you guys completed all problems?

One-fourth seems pretty good.

Considering that, for some programs (not math-oriented, mind you), the acceptance rate is about five percent.

I finished all of them, but I am very unsure about one of them (#5). Well, I am not sure about some others as well, but I think most of them are right.
Finger crossed.

Did anyone finish all the questions?

vicky_Itn, #5 is a little… weird. I think I have finished all the questions.

chaseholl, but I’m not sure the competitiveness of different kinds of programs are similar; glad to hear though.

Besides can anyone point out how many international students do they admit each year?

I know. I finished other nine questions long long time ago. #5 is…idk. Do you know any one who got in before? How did they do on those questions and standardized tests?

vicky_Itn, unfortunately I don’t know any of them.

I am also wondering about their admission rates for international students.

5 is weird but interesting, how did you guys go about solving it? I used contradiction…

I think I used contradiction too, but I am not sure about it.
Hope we all can get in.

btw, I am international applicant too.

Oh… You guys remind me I didn’t submit a genuine proof for prob five. I just came up with a specific color and corroborated its validity. Hope this don’t hurt much.

I used contradiction for 5 as well. Pretty sure I got everything but 9… I really haven’t done much math outside of classes (got 84 on the AMC12 lol). I hope that doesn’t stop me from getting in.

Anyone else going to apply to PROMYS too? I’d rather do SUMaC, so I’m not planning on working on the problems unless I’m not accepted.

escrow: “Anyone else going to apply to PROMYS too? I’d rather do SUMaC, so I’m not planning on working on the problems unless I’m not accepted.”

same here!

Escrow, vicky_Itn: why not Ross?

did you guys apply to program 1 or 2?

CV: Because it’s 8 f***ing weeks long. <_< I want to have a summer too.

I could only apply to Program 1 since I’m only in Pre-Calc right now.

I have heard that Ross and PROMYS are more selective than SUMaC. But how good are they though? Frankly, I’d go with SUMaC anyways.

I’ve heard that as well. Honestly part of the reason I’d rather do SUMaC is just because it’s shorter and I want to enjoy my summer. <_< Also I used to live in the Bay Area, so I would be able to visit people on Sundays (if they let you off campus). And SUMaC seems to cover a wider range of topics, while PROMYS just covers number theory. It seems as if it would be a more “fun” experience.

Anyway, is the wait for April 19th dragging on for anyone else? I’m trying not to think about but I can’t help it, heh.

Escrow, my advice is that work on applications to other programs while you’re waiting! I am doing the app to Ross now.

I hope to go to SUMaC too. Hey, it’s Stanford!
