Hi everyone.
I applied to SUMaC this year and didn’t see a forum for SUMaC 2020 yet so I decided to make one. Those who applied, what did you think of the exam and how many problems did you solve?
Hi everyone.
I applied to SUMaC this year and didn’t see a forum for SUMaC 2020 yet so I decided to make one. Those who applied, what did you think of the exam and how many problems did you solve?
I applied for SUMaC this year. I thought the exam was pretty easy, and I have rigorous proofs for almost every problem (my 6b and 6c proofs aren’t as good). My essays, however, are really bad, so I’m hoping the admissions will weight the exam higher. I honestly procrastinated too hard, and basically started the application around March 6, and spent maybe 1 hour total on the essays. I also forgot to put a lot of my extracurricular activities on the application, like volunteering in math, which I guess is just my fault.
Stats:
Rising Senior
ACT 36, PSAT 1490
GPA 3.92 UW, 4.21 W (they don’t offer weighted classes to underclassmen at my school)
133.5 AMC10, 121.5 AMC12
4x AIME qualifier, 9 on AIME last year, missed USAJMO by 4.5 points
Finished Multivariable Calculus last semester in school, also taken AP Calc BC and AP Stats
I have a lot of competition math experience, like HMMT, PUMaC, CHMMC, and ARML. I got 19th on Algebra and 81st overall at HMMT this year (which is the most prestigious high school math tournament, with almost every MOSPer and 200+ Olympiad qualifiers in attendance).
Overall, I’m not confident at all about my application. My written portion and supplementals were very lacking and probably make my application look incomplete.
I applied for sumac as well
I thought I would definitely get in after reading admission exam #2 but my confidence reached rock bottom after I attempted #6…
I still managed to solve all of them except #6 and I left a quasi-solution for #6. I focused a lot on my written responses, so I hope that helps
Anyways, here are my stats!
International student, Rising junior
SAT 1550/21, PSAT 1500, Math2C, phys, chem 800 (IDK if that matters but I still put it in)
GPA 4.0, Probably highest in school
AP Calculus BC 5 (Freshman year), IGCSE Math & Addmath A*
Self-studied multivariable calc and AP stats (Exam pending)
114 AMC12 118.5 AMC10 (Which are both not that good so I’m a little worried…)
AIME Qualifier twice, didn’t do that well on it
Somehow got into top 50 scoring students among all UKMT (British version of AMC) participants twice
Did a statistics project, won first place in national contest and got awarded by minister of education
Has some other awards in competitions like ARML, HMMT, NEAMC, so on…
Math teacher probably wrote a very good recommendation letter (at least i hope)
Did some other activities like school stem magazine editor in chief, math circle, school math club, math tutor, and so on…
Idk if I did a particularly good job, but I guess I’m a decent applicant for sumac
Applied for sumac
Stats:
Rising Senior
ACT 36, Math 2 800
GPA 4.37 W, 3.97 UW
AP calculus BC 5, currently in AP Stats
127.5 AMC 12, 129 AMC 10
AIME Qualifier 3 times, got a 10 last year and (projected) 12 this year - JMO last year and probably AMO this year (247.5 index)
Top 50 HMMT (most prestigious competition after AMC and invited to take an olympiad)
Have awards in ARML/SMT/BMT/ other smaller competitions
Got a recommendation from freshman math teacher (the current math teacher got sick after cruise and there’s rumors of corona so blehhh) and current AP Physics Teacher
Math Team treasurer + math tutor + co-run a youtube channel that is largely dedicated towards math content (subscribe to On The Spot STEM!)
besides 6b/6c I think I’m pretty solid…worked a decent amount on essays but didn’t spend too much time/not particularly outstanding
I applied for sumac too
I was able to solve all of the problems easily with only finding some trouble with 7. Still had a a solid 36 pages of work so I think it’s alright. I submitted around February since it didn’t take too long to finish I focused more on the written portion and made it genuine on why I wanted to go.
Stats:
Rising junior
I’ve only taken the PSAT 1500 (perfect math)
GPA: 3.97 UW, 4.9 W (rank 3)
Self-studied AP Calc AB & Linear Algebra
don’t know what an AMC or AIME are
Really good letter of recommendation from Math Team Coach ( he’s like a millionaire)
President of Math Team + Run a Math Tutoring Program at my hs
Math Program at Northwestern last year
idk if it helps being a minority & low-income
I don’t know if I’ll get in, probably not but lets see
Good luck!
The website says that results are supposed to be out by today… will this still be the case?
This is from one of their emails: “However, this transition will delay notification of your final admission status; we thank you for your understanding as we make every effort to keep you informed. We will let you know by the end of April whether you have been admitted to the online alternative, and by that time we will have full details about the program.”
Has anybody heard from Sumac yet ?
Day 70 of waiting for SUMaC I haven’t heard anyone get results back yet. I think it should be out by April 30 at the very latest.
i’m so nervous for the results. i absolutely love math (and stanford!), but i haven’t gotten any serious opportunities outside of our school’s math club and personal research to delve into real mathematics. it would be heartbreaking to get rejected.
i assume results come out at 7:00 pm EST today?
On the website it says that information will be available in early May about the program. So doubt it they will have anything today.
not yet
part of their email: We are excited to announce that we will be hosting an online alternative to SUMaC this summer. Your original application automatically transfers to this online program, and we are actively reviewing your application now. No further action is required for you to be considered for admission.
On Monday, we will share updates about this summer’s online program, including the revised session dates, course information, tuition, admissions decision date, and more.
Do you think they will accept more students now that it will be held online?
rejected
they didn’t even change their rejection letter from last year
did they email everyone already?
you can check here: https://precollegiate.stanford.edu/summer/sumaclogin.html
