Summa Cum Laude

Congratulations on your academic achievement. Himself, you will be automatically placed on the Chancellor’s List. If you are on the Dean’s Honor List for all three quarters in an academic year, you will be placed on the Chancellor’s List by default.

the chancellor’s list? what is that? ive gotten on the dean’s list for the past three quarters, so that means i got it too? does it get marked on my transcript?

Congrats man! Some information can be found here [UC Riverside Academic Senate: Academic Senate Bylaws](Bylaws). Im pretty sure its marked on your transcript. Maybe we’ll get a congratulatory letter on Monday or something.

Do not worry about the congratulatory letter by the dean of your respective colleges. Usually, the deans either send the congratulatory emails out a quarter or two late or they do not send them at all. I received an email congratulating me on my academic achievement (Dean’s list) for the winter quarter from the dean of CHASS just a week ago.

^lol me too.

Dark Prince: Thanks for all your help! As a transfer student to UCR, I was wondering a couple things about how summa cum laude is awarded to the students with the best GPA’s.

1) How is the GPA for latin honors calculated if you are a transfer student to UCR?

2) Is summa cum laude part of the University Honors Program?

Thank you again for all your help! Really appreciate it!

And Dark Prince: Would you know anything about how Phi Beta Kappa calculates a transfer student’s GPA as well?

debbiecakes, there is no separation between transfer and non-transfer students when calculating honor distinctions; it is based on your standing in the graduating class. But, as a transfer student you will have a clean slate and your GPA will be calculated based on the courses you have taken at the institution.

The Latin distinctions are not awarded through the university honors program. The latin honors is purely based off of your GPA standing within the graduating class. The distinction will be noted on your diploma. If you complete the university honors program you will receive a university honors distinction on your transcript. And if you complete a department honors program you will receive a department distinction on your transcript.

Phi Beta Kappa looks at your complete transcript for breadth and possibly factors in the GPA from your previous institution(s) when determining your eligibility. Even though I am a member, I do not know if they use the grades from your previous institution(s) when calculating your eligibility, however, I do know that they review your complete transcript. If you want I could attempt to inquire into it for you.

Ohhh, yeah that’s what I heard but I’m glad I was able to confirm that with you with regards to the ‘clean slate’. And I didn’t know there were different recognitions for different types of honors programs - that’s going to prove to be very helpful in deciding what to take up in my extra-curricular/co-curricular load!

And yes, DarkPrince, might you inquire into how Phi Beta Kappa calculates qualifying membership GPAs for transfers? Thank you so much again for your help!
