Summer '10

Shibboleth12, I don’t know of anyone who has heard from Aspen except those with fellowships.

I know a non-fellowship guy who heard, but it might have just been because he studies with the teacher he applied to Aspen to study with (he got in, big surprise).

Hey all, Got an acceptance this morning to the orchestra project at the Aldeburgh Festival with Oliver Knussen conducting and Pierre-Laurent Aimard as piano soloist! It’s so short (only June 18-25) and entirely free including travel, so I’m sure 99% that I’ll go!

Congratulations, Cosmos. That’s one I wasn’t familiar with, but just looked it up, and it looks fabulous!

That’s fantastic Cosmos! Should be a terrific experience.

Just heard back from Round Top today. I got in. Anyone been there before? What can you tell me about the program?

Some Round Top info here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/594473-summer-programs-2009-its-time-year-again-23.html#post1062739224</a> around post #330. You may want to search further or pm the two participants

My daughter was accepted to NRO in Colorado. It’s not her first choice, but I would like to know more about it, if anyone can tell me about it.
gyoun09, my daughter attended Round Top last year. Overall, it was a positive experience–the rooms were great, food was good, conductors were good–I think she liked JoAnn Falletta the best–there is a lot of alcohol around. Chamber music was disappointing. She felt that the level of playing was not terribly high. She considered reapplying for this year, but decided not to.

thanks for the info!

i’m waiting on a response from Brevard. at this point, it’s going to be contingent on financial aid but it seems like either festival would be great!

My son is still firmly committed to his recovering-from-high school-and-college-admissions/relaxing/sleeping/gigging plans, and I have officially accepted him to this program. It’s a very economical one as well, particularly if he gets a part-time job and earns some money.

jazz/shred mom…Great plan. Such a bittersweet time - enjoy every moment of your summer. Everything changes once they fly the coop!

gyoun09, Round Top was only $600 for the six weeks–very reasonable.

bluepearl - Son has had friends at NRO who loved it. My son was headed there last year, until he got off the waitlist at TMC. I saw photos - gorgeous. Breckenridge, Colorado - what’s not to like? These were college/grad students playing at a high level, so if your D has been accepted there, I think that’s great! What are your daughter’s concerns?

Binx, she’s an 18 year old violinist . We don’t know anyone who’s been to NRO. And she has a solo opportunity with an orchestra in the fall and needs to get her concerto back up to speed, so I don’t know how much practice time she would have for that. I don’t think there are any private lessons at NRO and I’m not sure how much chamber music there is. On the other hand it’s free and yes, it is in Colorado (which she loves!).

bluepearl - I don’t think there are lessons. It’s strickly “pre-professional.” However, I think the level of playing is quite high, and there may well be others there who could do peer-to-peer “lessons”. (Not sure how to explain it, but it’s something my son does a lot with a couple close friends. Where, prior to an audition or solo performance, one of them will play for the others and get critique and suggestions.)

I still think that’s quite an accomplishment for your D! Congratulations. She must be amazing.

Thanks, Binx! I’m sure NRO would be a good experience. She’s going to wait a few days to see if she hears from the other programs before she decides.

Should we be hearing from summer camp apllications by now? We applied early February and haven’t heard from any of them yet.

Igloo, last year’s comprehensive summer thread is here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/594473-summer-programs-2009-its-time-year-again.html?highlight=summer</a></p>

Cosmos started a list around post #100 (102?), dated 3/7. Notifications are program specific, and each program has its own timetable. You might want to eyeball the progression of additions, and see if you can ballpark timing of acceptances for your programs(s).

Realize things do change from year to year, but it can be an indicator.

Thank you violadad. This site is amazing! Very informative and extremely well organized. It looks we will hear towards the end of March or early April. Thank you.

Vocalists – If you are still looking for a summer program, I would strongly recommend the Summer Voice Institute at Manhattan School of Music. My daughter attended their inaugural even this past summer, prior to the start of her senior year as an undergrad.

Last year they conducted placement auditions on the first day, so depending on your experience you be placed in appropriate level courses for voice, movement and acting. In addition to these courses there were also classes (and masterclasses) for diction, auditioning, MT and several others.

The best summer program money we have ever spent in the US. Prepared her well for audition season her senior year.

They are still taking applications, but I believe they close in the next two weeks or so.

Best of luck.
