Summer 11 Music Festivals

Anyone looking into these?

Yes, for piano. My daughter has never been to one before and we are open to all suggestions.

i’m applying to orford and tanglewood. good luck all :)

Any idea when results will come out from various summer festivals? My daughter applied only to programs that offer grants and just heard back from one in Europe-- but they want an answer by February 25th.

I went to Eastern Music Fesitval in Greensboro, NC last year for piano, and it was fantastic. I’m happy to answer any questions anyone has about it!

Has anyone or their daughter/son attended the Schleswig-Holstein Orchestral Academy? My daughter has been accepted and must answer them by Friday, before she hears back from other festivals. She’d accept right away, but their enddate conflicts with training to be an RA at her conservatory (she won’t know if she’s been chosen to be an RA until April, however.) If she turns it down, she could be missing a great opportunity, and she doesn’t know what to do. Any comments welcome!

schleswig holstein, spoleto, and tanglewood fellowship results are starting to come out, just fyi.

My daughter got into Schleswig Holstein a couple weeks ago and the deadline for her to answer was last Friday. She asked for an extension because she hasn’t heard back from her other programs and SHMF ends two days after she would need to be back at school for training sessions… what a dilemma. Today she got another email from them demanding that she answer by tomorrow. It’s hard to pass up this opportunity. Any advice?

If I were in her position, I’d go. What are her other potential options? There are a few festivals that I’d maybe rather do, but S-H isn’t a step down from many festivals. I’d feel better about signing up for a great one and maybe missing out on something else than saying no and coming up short later. Plus, really, if something better comes along that she really would rather do, those festivals pick alternates. She’d be making one of them very happy by creating a vacancy.

tuba, she is waiting to hear from MAW (the faculty has only just received tapes to review and no decisions have been made.) She is on the wait-list for Kneisel, but insider info says high on the list and there is reason to think she will make it in (but “no guarantees”.) She knows she can go to Aspen, but was waitlisted for a fellowship and has been told she might receive scholarship-- we just don’t know. All but Aspen are free festivals, but SHMF also provides airfare. The thing is, SHMF, a great orchestral festival, is the only one that would not provide private lessons, which is on her priority list. Also, she really does want to be able to return to school to complete the leadership training, and SHMF’s late date would make that impossible. However, if she refuses SHMF she could be left in an awkward position.

tuba, we thought about accepting SHMF, but her teacher advised her she should never back out of a commitment. She asked for an extension upfront and we were surprised that they said no. But I do understand their position of wanting to have everything set up in advance.

That makes sense. In light of that, I suppose, I might be more inclined not to commit. That’s a really tough spot. I guess if Aspen is a sure thing, you can’t really make a bad decision.

How much does she think it would negatively impact her RA application if she talked to the Residential Life office about the dilemma? (Congrats to your D, by the way - nice to have choices!)

The RA program is extremely competitive (because it affords a big break on housing costs, among other things.) She is sure that she would be eliminated if she could not guarantee being there when the training starts.

I was afraid you’d say that.

Does anyone know whether it is really true that Tanglewood calls people who’ve been admitted?

They don’t for BUTI, but I would guess that you are asking about the Fellows program. I don’t know whether they call or not.

Glassharmonica, a few years ago, a friend of my son’s got into S-H, and accepted. A short time later, he got off the waitlist for TMC, which he preferred. He then contacted S-H, and they were mad, and told him never to apply there again. He’s gone to TMC the past three summers, so I guess no regrets! My S was horrified that he would do that, but it hasn’t seemed to come back to bite him in any way.

(I think there weren’t repercussions because the European contingent and the US contingent of camps don’t have a lot of overlap. I wouldn’t do this to TMC or MAW or Aspen!)

Oh, wow. Lesson learned. My mistake; don’t do that.

Thanks Binx, I just showed this message to my daughter who is in agony deciding what to do… and she said, “GOOD INFORMATION!”

binx, what did you mean about the european contingent vs the american? My impression was that there is only one festival
