Summer 2011; Impressive or no?

So lets assume I applied and was accepted to this internship in Washington D.C. with my state Senator Ron Wyden. Aside from the fact that I really, really want to do it (because I love politics, government, and public service) how impressive would it look on a college resume to places like HYPS?

Personally, it feels like it would be very impressive paired with all the other things I have been doing in my community and my love for this kind of thing.

But if it wouldn't be, for lack of a better word, prestigious/impressive, I feel that I should spend my summer differently, possibly learning Arabic (but I can do that next summer, too, because I am a sophomore currently and have two summers ahead of me).

Thank you, SO much!

By the way, I have an e-mail into the internship people asking if this program is even available to high schoolers, but anyways, yeah!

FYI, you can’t just learn a language, especially one as difficult as Arabic, in one summer. Arabic would take years to gain even some proficiency. Just enjoy yourself and do what makes you happy. If you do what you’re passionate about and do it well, the rest will work itself out.

Well, I would be taking Beginning Arabic. I want to do both, but unfortunately I am intent on doing what is the most impressive, because that is the tipping point on what I will do.

^ Do what you love. Not what impresses colleges.

God, i hate the system we’ve created.

Colleges won’t find it impressive if that’s your reasoning.

I must not be saying this correctly. Sorry.

I have equal desire for both, I would find enjoyment out of both, and therefore if one of these things is more impressive, it would be an added bonus.

^^colleges won’t necessarily know that that’s his reasoning.

Thats also true…
but I understand what he means

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Be careful. College adcoms are keen and experienced at picking up on EC that are just done to “impress”.

If you weren’t doing this for college, would you still choose it?

As I’ve said,

That’s the line I have trouble with. There’s no difference in “prestige” between helping a senator and learning Arabic because they permeate two completely different sets of interests, one for politics and the other for learning languages. So, you shouldn’t base your decision based on which colleges will like more, because it’s not the activities they’re going to like, but what those activities say about ** you **. How do you want to present yourself? Hell, do both if you want, but only if that’s the you you want to show to adcoms.

I understand, that makes total sense. Thank you :)
