Summer acting programs

<p>I know it's a bit early, but I want to find some good acting summer programs for this summer. I will be an upcoming junior and 16, so it's something to consider. I have found some programs and wanted to know how good they are. </p>

<p>Does anyone know how reputable The US Performing Arts Camps are? I'm intrested in this program at Florida State: Acting</a> for the Camera Camp/Workshop</p>

<p>U of K also has a screen acting program, but I'm pretty sure Florida State is closer. I think I do like this program for screenwriting:Screenwriting</a> Camp/Workshop</p>

<p>I liked Hampshire's program and ATC's, but they are more money. I also found that IU- Bloomington has a program for two weeks and it looks like it's worth the money: Summer</a> Sessions at Indiana University Bloomington - Precollege</p>

<p>Anyone have of any other good programs? I already know of NYU's program, which I may want to get a job and try and do it next year. I am too young for Northwestern's program and I would also like a program which has scholarships. Thanks!</p>

<p>My D seriously considered the summer program at Yale but decided to do something else. I’ve never talked to anyone that has done it but …it’s Yale. And it sounded like a wonderful program. </p>

<p>I don’t think it provides housing though.</p>

<p>The summer teen intensive at Stella Adler is GREAT. My son went for two summers (five or six weeks, five days a week) and learned a ton. It’s really a pre-college program, in that a lot of the teachers are the same ones that teach the NYU drama students in the studio.</p>

<p>My daughter attended several different programs over the years and by far the best was the Young Company Theatre Camp offered by the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, VA. <p>It’s a 3 week, very intense program, reasonably priced, not a marketing tool for any university program (as some are), led by inspired & impassioned teachers/professional company members, and whether you are into classical or musical, you will learn more about theater than you ever dreamed possible. Extremely talented kids from all over the country, but a really great vibe, not cutthroat competitive. Check it out!</p>

<p>datripp- Thanks. Yeah, right now NYU’s $$$ is the only problem and that’s why I want to get a job and pay for some of it the following summer. </p>

<p>hotNcold- Thanks! I have never studied Shakespeare before. I have done training for film acting and have been in all contemporary plays. I read Romeo and Juliet, never liked it and can hardly read and understand it, so don’t know how I’ll act it. But it will be good for me because I have like no training for classical theater. Is it all about Shakespeare? I will check it out.</p>

<p>Right now IU’s program seems the best for this summer and NYU for the following. I was thinking I can do NYCDA’s program before my freshman year of college. I am not intrested in musical theater, so everyone knows. I cannot sing or dance, very bad. If anyone knows any program longer then 5 days for film acting, would love to hear of some programs.</p>

<p>I just wanted to mention that Boston University’s summer program is very good. There is a member on here, Becca1991, who attended it. You could possibly PM her for a first hand account. She is currently a classmate of my son’s in the BU Theatre BFA program.</p>

<p>Earlycollege, I’m glad to see that you now seem more open to learning classical acting, Shakespeare, etc. Good for you! :)</p>

<p>Chiming in here to recommend the summer program at the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, Virginia. Wonderful program and fantastic chance to study acting with professionals in Shakespeare and to perform at the Blackfriar’s, as well as to see half a dozen plays in repertory.</p>

<p>Thanks. I looked into the BU and it looks good. I don’t really know if I want a 5 week program though. The dates for both programs (BU and ASC) are close to school, so that’s always something to consider. I liked programs in June, this way it’s not as close to school. As of right now, IU’s program and ASC are on the top of my list. The only BFA program I may consider is NYU for college. This is because of my interests and wanting to double major. </p>

<p>Singing yeah, maybe one day! But a miracle has to happen first!</p>

<p>ASC is in Staunton in the Shenandoah Valley of VA… not a bad place to spend 3 weeks in the summer! The Mary Baldwin and Stuart Hall campuses are beautiful. Staunton is a great town as well.</p>

<p>I have had a few students from JMU work there in the summer as resident counselors. They loved the experience and the kids.</p>

<p>There’s a lot on the boards about Stagedoor Manor-- do a search and you’ll find posts and posts. People love it, my D has friends who’ve gone and thrived there. If you want to apply, do it today! They are first come first served, and fill up very fast.</p>

<p>I have to say the price is too much for some of these programs. I would prob have to get a job for ASC. IU’s program is good for money, but found out it is a musical theater program too. Anyone know of any other programs for about 2 weeks and maybe 1,500 dollars?</p>

<p>I am unclear as to whether you are a junior now, or will be next year. If now then you should definitely look at the NHSI program at Northwestern. If you’ll be a junior next year then consider it for next summer. It is an excellent - and physically intense - program</p>

<p>University of the Arts has a shorter program, three weeks, if I recall correctly.
It’s in Philadelphia.</p>

<p>The University of Michigan has a 2 week program for about $1500, called the Theater and Drama academy. Separate from their musical theatre program. Part of a whole series of summer programs that go under the heading of MPulse. Here is the link:</p>

<p>The University of Minnesota has a 10or 12 day program that this past year cost about $1000. It also is drama, rather than musical theater. </p>
