Hey, everyone. I am a junior, and I have strong base ECs (president positions, state offices, etc). But, I want to do something impactful over the summer. I want something that will also help me stand out in this whole college process, too (overall not my first priority, though). I love politics and government, and I had a few ideas, but I don’t know what steps I should take or if it’s a good idea. Does anyone have any ideas for what I could do? Thanks.
The obvious activities are Junior Statesman or interning for your congressperson or senator. They aren’t necessarily going to be standouts on a college application, but they are worthwhile experiences nonetheless. Try going for the internship over the page program, but the page program does have more handholding and supervision.
TASP/TASS may have programs of interest. It’s more learning than activism, but they’re very competitive programs.
UCLA Summer Law Institute? Dartmouth Debate Institute (lots of places offer debate camps)? Neither are necessary impactful in a broad sense, but they would be relevant to you. Again, more learning than activism.
Closer to home you might be able to intern at the state or local government level OR go for a journalism-related internship, since a good part of that is closely related to political science. Those could be impactful, depending on what you do with the opportunities.
There is a lot out there! I’m sure you’ll get plenty of ideas.
Also you could get a job and work. It is good to understand how the workplace works.
@bopper I honestly don’t know if I will have time, considering I won’t be in the state for a month, and I have to allocate 120 hours towards my senior capstone project. I wouldn’t want to get a job to not do any hours.
