summer after freshman year

from bronx science (very respected school); 95/100 avg (unweighted, thats how my school does it), no AP/honors freshman year. next yeer 2 APs and 2 honors. 187 on psats (didnt study)
looking to major in math/science(mainly physics/chem)/engineering
schools i want to go to: 1st choices: MIT,Dartmouth/Princeton/Brown
2nd: cornell, Uchicago, JHop
safety: rutgers or stony

idk wat i shd do this summer. my 8th grade SATs are getting me into CTY and SIG (qualifications are more difficult for cty). Im also looking at brown precollege (to take number theory+learn matlab, will be helpfull for math research project) Im assuming ill get into brown cuz i have all As and they get mad money if i go ($7K for 3 weeks).
so im weighing CTY @ JHOP vs BROWN. i think brown will be more interresting because of wat im taking. (at CTY i would take chem prep(taking chem next yeer)). but maybe if i go to CTY it will look huge on my app vs Brown.

wat do u guys think, is CTY a high prized extra curricular or shd i just go to brown?

They’re both impressive. If you can’t decide, do one after 9th grade and the other after 10th grade.

(And, if you really want to attend MIT/Dartmouth/Princeton/Brown, I think you start practicing proper spelling and puctuation. Text-type shortcuts are fine for texting. But they don’t look good to colleges…at all.)

I’m not so sure that a paid program at Brown is going to look very attractive on college apps, also im hoping that ill get into something a little more prestigious next summer

The Brown program is a “you-pay-you-get-to-party-for-a-few-weeks” moneymaking thing. It’s fun, but not particularly engaging if you’re very driven and want to learn a lot.

chase, thats actually very helpful

do you think CTY(center for talented youth) will look better ?

CTY is geared toward gifted and “talented youth”, so I think it looks more “legitimate”. A significant effect it will not have, but I think it’s a bigger positive than Brown.

Remember, the point of going to a summer program is not to have a nice-looking college application, but to grow as a person and learn.

I loved CTY programs. I took intro to biomedicine or something like that at JHU after 7th grade. The class was good but I felt that the overall program was really strict. It may have been because some kids hit a pregnant women with a frisbee first session… idk. I don’t know how it is now. Compared to the previous CTY programs I did at stanford it wasn’t as fun. This may have been because I didn’t find any good friends too. The kids in my class were weird… Of course there is no way to predict what kind of kids there will be this year. It might of just been a dud summer.

From what I hear about Brown you can do WHATEVER. Seriously, my friend went to NYC for the day (left at like 4am train and came back by the 11pm curfew) with two friends and no counsellors. Also Brown is a pay and go program. That said they still have some interesting classes.

I guess if you do not like your class at JHU you can try switching. I cannot tell you which program to choose; only you can make that decision for yourself.

More likely it was because you weren’t yet a high schooler, although hitting the woman probably didn’t help.

… if I were from a wealthy New England family, that would sound awesome. But I’m not, which makes it a waste of money.

SIG is MUCH easier to get into. All you have to do is be 95%ile. To get into CTY you have to be 95%ile to take the SAT and then in the top 3rd of the top 5% to qualify for the program. Never been to SIG but the three kids I know who went said it wasn’t challenging at all. Again though, that’s just anectdotal.

I did CTY and loved it. It’s not a wildly prestigious program but I have found many students to be absolutely brilliant (I know several students accepted to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, top LACs, etc) and the teaching quality to be excellent as well.

CTY definitely looks better than Brown. At least CTY has minimal qualifications and isn’t nearly as overpriced. Brown’s tuition is preposterous imo. Also, I would consider going to CTY at Lancaster or Dickinson. Johns Hopkins has a reputation for being the least fun, the most strict, and having a large proportion of younger students. I went to Lancaster and adored every minute of it. Let me know if you have any questions!

@ chaseholl- the program was for mostly high schoolers. I was the youngest allowed to go. Also the kid who went to NYC was from cali and had never been there. A day trip to NYC is very cost effective seeing as how much hotels are

^gives a good summary of the program and I agree with it. I never went to those sites but heard they were very fun. However if you are interested in JHU it may be nice to see the campus. Also something like 15% (I made that up but remember it being a surprising %) of the JHU class is made up of CTY students.

@ender: so your saying that CTY will improve my chances of getting into JHU?

btw the JHU site is full, im going to try to get into lancaster or saratoga springs for physics. probably not going to brown

I am not sure if it is a correlation, causation, or effect of intelligent students learning about JHU. I only know it is.

I know on the JHU application it asks if you have participated in CTY programs of any kind so I’d say it must help a bit or they wouldn’t ask. I didn’t apply to JHU though but my sister did.

BTW, Dickinson Physics session 2 is open. I’d go there. That site is supposed to be a lot of fun. Here’s the order, based on what I’ve heard, of most fun CTY sites:

 • Lancaster
 • Dickinson
 • Loyola Marymount
 • Skidmore
 • Hopkins
 • Hawaii

Check out realcty.org and postctydepression.com if you want any more info about student life or academics at CTY.

@raiderade- I just checked out realcty.org and I never realized how intense it was. CTY has soo many traditions that I missed out on because JHU was boring. However it appears they have started to conform. Also my session (07.2) is mentioned as the worst session in terms of being strict. Figures…

So it looks like CTY is fun for most people. I have a slight problen tho. Im a science/math person, I only want to do intensive cty(because explorations takes everybody). The only courses that are still open in science are chem and physics. I can get into chem but prob wont be able to go because its in LA. The only other option is lancaster physics, but the prerequisite is algebra 2. I never took aalgebra one or two, but I got a 97 on the algebta regents(ny state exam). Do you guys think tht CTY will be lenient and let me take physics?

Yes they will be lenient. If you don’t submit the prerequisites they probably won’t say anything.

Ok great, so should I send them my transcript or nothing at all?

Nothing I’d say. They won’t ask I bet.
