I've applied to a few competitive summer programs (e.g. PROMYS, MITES) and also have to knock out some community service, but on the high chance that I don't get into those programs because they are so competitive I've been looking into getting an unpaid internship at a startup for the summer.

If I could get one (I have a few contacts) is this a good use of my time? Will it look good on an application or just meh? Would it have to be with a larger company, or would a small startup be ok as well? What is something else I could do with my summer?

Thank you for your responses.
