Summer at BROWN

I am very interested in the Brown summer program. I have read a little about it and I am definitely going to apply in December, but I have a few questions.

How competitive is it? How many of the applicants are accepted? How do they decide who is accepted?

Has anyone taken the creative writing fiction class? What was it like?

Can you apply for financial aid? Do you do that before or after you are accepted?

And how was it? Fun? Memorable? Favorite parts?

Thanks a bunch in advance

summer at brown is really really good, i would highly reccomend it..... i think pretty much anyone gets accepted unless your really really stupid and your teachers say in their recs that they think it was a bad idea but i dont really think anyone gets vut or anything... I dont know anyone who took that class, but no one i know had a problem with the class they took, and most people thought they were interesting... Summer at brown its self is REALLY fun... you have so much freedom, and they pretty much let you do anything you want within the rules (check-in at 11-12, no drugs or alcohol) and there are so many people doing it there is no doubt youll meet really interesting people... the only problem w/ it is not having enough time to do your hw (not that theres that much anyway)

Summer@Brown can be encapsulated in one word: AMAZING

Yes, pretty much everyone gets in, I know a bunch of people who did a 4 week creative writing thing, they had to write alot, and seemed to have a lot more work than I did. The only "rules" are: tell your RA if you will be out really late/go away for an extended period of time, no sleeping over in opposite gender's room, no drugs or alcohol. I know many people who violated all of those rules, the only part of that I obeyed was no drugs, which even if we were allowed to do, i wouldnt have.

Favorite memories: smoking hookah on wriston quad, making a song with my friends on garage band (this program for macs), going to the And1 mixtape tour with my friends, parties, just plain awesome.

But did they like the creative writing class?

From all of the reviews, this program is starting to sound more like a party then a college prep course....not that this is a problem, but I would like to learn something :)

and is it possible to get financial aid?

yes, FA is available, i dont believe they guarantee to give you what you need. The kids I knew enjoyed the creative writing class. And for many whom I knew, it was a lot of work, but they weren't attending very rigorous high schools, and so for some of them, the 3 weeks they were there required them to do more work than they normally do during the school year. I, on the other hand, attended an elite private school, and so w/o doing any work, I had the 2nd highest grade in the class, .5 points behind a girl from a nearby private school where I'm from.

So, it may be a party for you, or it may be one of the most challenging things you've ever done.

did the kids who struggled a bit in the class have time to party also? how long are you in class each day and how long did those kids who struggled spend on work after class?

and what class did you take?

thanks for all the info so far :)

My friends didnt "struggle" in the writing class, they just had alot more work to do than I did. I avged about 2-3 hrs of work a week (yes that's right, not a day, a week) Whereas they had about 1-2hrs of work day (i think, not sure, this was summer 2004)

I was in class 3 hrs a day, I believe they had the same deal too. Most of the classes are 3 hrs a day, but some are longer.

I took a class on Forensic Science.

1-2 hours isn't so bad....because I definitely want to have some fun when I go, but I don't mind doing someeeeeeeee homework...

Any other suggestions anyone?

best experience of my life
philosophy east & west was a really good 3week class

what did you do in that class, and why did you enjoy the program so much?
