I was just wondering if anyone had done summer at brown and if they would reccomend it (also what class/program you did there)? thanks

I did abnormal psychology in summer '04.

It was HELL loads of fun, the location and setting of brown is just amazing, you meet tons of people, the mall is a trolley ride away, Thayer street is amazing, the food is not bad, no curfew, the rooms in the Hall I lived in were nice (Sears) and i had a blast.

that sounds incorrect. I had an interview yesterday to be a summer RA and they told me there was I think 1130 weeknight and 1230 weekend curfew, and RAs had to check students in. (I mean, I assume you are precollege)

Yup, precollege, thats strange, the RAs all said there was no curfew, and no curfew was enforced (even by the Brown Police at 4 am)

maybe they changed it this year... but was it fun? what kind of stuff did you do when you werent in class? were the professors good?

i only had 1 professor, and she was great, but she normally teaches at U of conneticut.

Thayer street was RIGHT next to my dorm and there are tons of shops and restuarants there. There was also a trolley (think San Fran trolleys) which costs $1 and it would drop you off close to the mall (6 floors of carpeted heaven)

There is also a mini Italy-like street full of restaurants (again, a trolley ride away).

Theres also the brown gym/lounge (the Bear's Lair) with 3 pool tables, video games (old games, but games nonetheless) and 2 ping pong tables.

There will be tons of parties and stuff so it never really gets boring. You can also take the Greyhound to Boston (1 hour away) over the weekend.

how long was the one that you went on? also, do you have a sn so i can ask you more questions about it?

i went on the 3 week course, im me at mysticfiesta i'm online now :)

I did summer@brown last summer, too! I took Conceptual Modern Physics with a grad student at Brown. He's international, so his English was lacking a bit, but he was a cool guy and generally explained things very well.

iridiscent is right, there was no curfew and there was a ridiculously cool amount of freedom. In fact, Brown seriously doesn't care what you do, at all. My friends and I got stuck in Newport on the 4th of July, and we called some emergency office at Brown at around 1 in the morning to see how we could get home, and they told us, "Uhhh, be safe. Good night." It ended up being a very interesting night. lol.

Anyway, there's always lots to do outside of class. There were clubs, guest speakers, and TONS of parties. Plus, Thayer Street has some really awesome places to shop and hang out, and downtown Providence is fun too. The mall is especially nice (5 stories, carpeted and therefore clean!, with a movie theater and every store imaginable).

So yea, definitely consider summer at brown. I had a lot of fun.

i was there last summer too! i took techniques in biotechnology with a Brown professor. She was sooo nice and explained things really well. i learned so much from that class! I had a lot of fun doing labs (that's pretty much all we did) and the atmosphere was so laid back. I'd also recomend the Intro to Med class.

at the beginning of the program (when the parents are dropping the kids off) they say how there's a curfew and all that. but no one enforces it at all. i was going to go to nyc w/ my roomate and a couple guys for a weekend because no one would ever find out or care at all. we didn't end up going cuz she had to leave early since her dad was really sick.

anyway, thayer street is awesome. it has some great restaurants, an indie movie theater, an urban outfitters and some other retail shops. the mall is amazing, though it does lack in the higher end stores. i made some really great friends there. i had the time of my life. i wish i could go again this summer, but i don't have time. so yea, i'd really recommend summer@brown.

ive been to summer@brown 2 years in a row - i took philosophy: themes from existentialism and the next yr took "science, perception, and reality"...

ive been doing other summer-study programs in previous years, and i have to say, i had the most fun @ brown by far. prolly cuz of the freedom and location near providence. i loved my courses, first of all (professors were really amazing), and there is def. NO curfew and my class this past summer was 1 PM which was realy nice...it would getout at 4 and i had the restof the day free. @ nite, u could do w/e u want ... thayer st. was a favorite place to hang out w/ all the stores and restaurants (antonio's is really good for pizza, i also love smoothie king, starbux, au bon pain, johnny rockets) and also providence mall was great. first year i went, there was a free third eye blind concert near the mall and every sunday ( i think) theres waterfire in providence which is really pretty. theres no drinking or drugs but i kno ppl who did anyway just didnt get caught. h/e those that get caught r thrown out. i also went to a few niteclubs ther like the complex or barry's ....anyway u meet tons of really cool ppl and even international students and have an amazing time. 3 weeks went by reallyfast and imstill friends w quite a few ppl i met ther. im a senior now and ended up applying to brown but ill prolly end up going to my 1st choice yale at this point...h/e brown is awesome and i highly recommend summer@brown!

was 3 weeks a really long time to do it for? is it hard to get into (do you know anyone who didnt get in?)
