Summer at Northwestern

Anybody taking classes at Northwestern this summer? I wanted to get an idea of what the atmosphere is like on campus during the summer.

umm i've had enough school this year. this is gonna be an awesome summer before college and i'm definitely not spending it in classrooms.

I'm doing the NHSMI program and I also have the same question.

I spent last summer at NU in the College Preparation Program. I had a great time. The campus is a bit quiet but not completely empty. There are always fun things to do around Evanston and in Chicago. The classes are smaller (I had under 15 people in both of mine). I have heard that some classes are larger though; such as the science ones (around 60 students).

If you have any more questions just ask away!

i have one.

why spend summer in class when i can be on the virginia coastline?

How strict are the rules at the College Prep program? Are the RA's cool? People have been telling me that Northwestern is a pretty uptight place; I wan't to go away to school, not summer camp or prison.

The rules are not strict at all. We had to be in the dorm by 11:00pm. Origionally, I thought that the restrictions would be annoying but really they are quite lenient. They give you the rules on the first day and they may seem to be very strict...but as long as you follow the forms you signed and get back by 11:00 you will be fine.

Many of us got into the habit of staying up until dawn very often. Most of my RAs were amazing; they schedualed trips to fun places in Chicago(Second City, a White Sox Game, Museums, Imax showings...). The people in the program were fun and interresting. We were able to go into Evanston and downtown Chicago whenever we wanted. People are not constantly working all the time, but having fun. Overall, it is a great experience!

Tip: If you end up not liking your class or professor you can easily go and switch on the first day.

One of my classes had a TA last year and one had a professor. I ended up loving the one with the prof and not liking the one with the TA.

There is a lot of reading for the classes and a few papers. Since I averaged around 3hrs of class per day (One class met Mon and Wed, the other Tues and Thurs), I had plenty of time to get it all completed.

If you are taking Chem or Phys you will probably have a slightly larger workload ahead of you.

Oh and...the atmosphere is not uptight at all!

Again, I do not mind answering any more questions. I am also spending this summer at NU since I loved the last so much. I am, however, going to be at the NHSI.

Another VERY IMPORTANT tip: Bring a fan!

LOL Funny you should mention that, because I have three fans and I am currently figuring out what combination of angles is the best set up for them. Thanks for all the info, I am really looking forward to it now. I will be in Foundations of Screenwriting and Theories of Persuasion, so it shouldn't be too big of a work load.

Are you guys talking about CTD? or is this some other program? (sorry if my question is stupid)

I am going for high school college prep program.

Wesley, what dorms are you assigned to this year?

The college prep program was supposed to be at one of the older dorms, but I heard it got moved. I think I get all of my housing info pretty soon, so I will let you know/ create a thread about summer housing. I don't know anyone at Northwestern or in Chicago at all, so it wouldn't hurt to meet a few people going in.

Yeah, they moved our location last year also. We were supposed to stay in Allison but got moved to West Fairchild. This year I am in East Fairchild (unless they change it), so it will be interresting to see if you guys end up right next to us again. My program starts a few weeks later than your's though. I am looking foward to the summer! My school gets out this week!

Yeah I just checked it and we are in West Fairchild, so we will probably be neighbors. Do East and West Fairchild share a building/dining/commons?

Well, hello neighbor! East and West Fairchild are separate buildings that are mirror images of each other and right next to one another. They are in a good location because they are about 2 or 3 blocks from downtown Evanston.

Dining is located in another dorm about 2 blocks away; so we will eat in the same area (although same with most of the rest of the campus).

The funny thing is that I remember last year for the first week or so the CPPers had the campus to themselves and when the Cherubs started to arrive we all got annoyed. We had rather liked the silence. Also, while I was there, although there are, I think, around 800 cherubs or so, we rarely talked or conversed with them, let alone saw them.

One thing I am kind of nervous about this summer is that fact that we have an earlier curfew (10:30) and we are constantly working(although, fun work) all day! I had so much fun free-filled time last year:-)

Anyway, I am looking forward to it! I'll have to come by and visit the old West Fairchild. Come to think of it...East Fairchild may seem really backwards.

That sounds pretty good. I wish the walk to the food was a little bit longer, I could afford to walk off a few pounds lol. Since we are going to be neighbors, you should check out my website (wesburger.com) and facebook me. Yes, I know it is weird to have your own website but it was a project for my web page design class. Anyway, thanks again for the info.

You're welcome. See you around this summer.

Is this program only if you're already accepted into NU? Or is it just to get a feel for the campus, etc.?
