Summer att Brown!

I’m thinking of attending the 7 week programme with a friend next summer.
The thing is, i am a rising senior but my friend is a rising junior - so does that decrese the chance of him getting in?
and also, any advice on whether to do the 3 week or the 7 week?
i did summer discovery at northeastern @ boston this summer for 4 weeks and it felt short! a lot of partying with the non-english speaking kids though…we had like loads of europeans and turkish kids…is it like that at all? or is it more engaged and serious? because id much rather something serious - but relaxing.

let me know! thanks.

I did Summer@Brown for 3 weeks as a rising senior. It was absolutely AMAZING. I can't say how much I loved it; I had never been away from home for more than a week before, so I was absolutely petrified, but I had the best time ever. I made great friends (most of whom were rising juniors, so I doubt you're friend would have a problem... on my floor, out of the 12 girls, I was one of 3 who were rising seniors... the rest were juniors and a sophmore I think).

In terms of the intensity, I think it depends largely on which class you take. A few of my friends took the Intro. to Medecine course, which I'm pretty sure was intense... they had an exam at the end and I think had to do a research paper. So there's was pretty serious. Also they were in class for (I think) 6 hours a day.

My class, while tons of fun, wasn't as intense. For work, we'd either have to read a chapter from a book or solve some problems, and we had to do a big powerpoint presentation at the end of the class (researching something that we hadn't discussed in class).

I personally loved the food... I know a lot of people aren't crazy about Brown's food, but I thought it was great. I don't know that I'm in the majority though. My dorm room was also pretty large... oh and as to international kids, my roommate (also a rising senior) was international :) And her twin sister (who was on the floor above us) was also (obviously). I still keep in touch with 5 or 6 of my friends.

They had a few university sponsored parties (an 80s dance, etc.), which I didn't go to because I just don't really like partying. I heard that they weren't THAT great, but I can't say for sure seeing as I didn't go.

Every weekend, they had a trip to another university and a trip to a city. You don't have to go on any of the trips, by the way, they're completely optional, but they're a nice way to explore another city or see another university.

During the week, they had a variety of seminar-type things (a lot of them were centered around admissions and college... the admissions process, how to write a college essay, how to take notes in college, how to take exams, how to prepare for interviews, etc.). There were also some completely random (for lack of a better word) activities, like Zen Meditation, guest lecturers, etc.

Basically, it was a ton of fun :)

I did the seven week program as a rising senior this summer. It was a lot of fun (and you get credit for it - which is a plus.) You're in the same classes as undergrads so its a pretty realistic college experience. The work wasn't unmanageable. (I just wouldn't suggest taking both Physiology and Neuroscience at the same time. Some of my friends did and spent a few sleepless nights when they had exams for both classes on the same day.) Since, the seven week program is primarily for seniors the three week program might be better for your friend. I'm not sure if they accept juniors into the 7wk one - all of the juniors I met were doing shorter programs (ie: 1, 2, 3, or 6).

I'm not sure if I would entirely agree with the post above - although not horrible, after seven weeks I did begin to get sick of eating pasta at the V-Dub.

Some people did start to get homesick after a while. I did a six week program the summer after my junior year, so I didn't really think that the seven weeks were that long.

Overall, it was a great experience. I met a lot of great friends - many of whom I still keep in touch with. Good luck!

wow thanks guys...
i think i'll definetly be applying.

there's a 6 week programme? i definetly did not see that on the website!

after more careful reading it says "Exceptional sophomores (just completing their sophomore year) may also consider the credit program provided they are "A" students."

i'm not quite sure what that means...hmmm
