Summer attendance a requirement??

Can someone explain the summer semester? My son just said that he was told that all incoming students must attend one Summer session before they graduate. Is this accurate?? If so, why??

Yes, that is a requirement, nine hours–I think that this can be done with online courses.

It’s been a requirement at UF since I went to school in the 80’s. It was put in place to help ensure students graduate on time and so they could get more use out of the campus over the summer (all of that summer capacity was going to waste).

The two most common ways to get out of it, is by doing a UF sponsored study abroad trip, or by doing an internship (not a summer job, but an internship that’s related with your major).

Financial hardship can also count. If, for example, you had a scholarship (Bright Futures does NOT count) that paid for your room and board, but not over the summer.

The study abroad counts even if it doesn’t have the full nine hours credit.
And you can’t fulfill the requirement by taking only on-line credits.

If a freshman starts in Summer B and takes 6 credits, can he complete the remaining 3 “summer credits” online over another summer? Or must he physically attend a second summer session for the 3 credits?

Summer B fulfills your requirement but why only 6 credits? You’ll have to check.about that.

The engineering school has a 6 credit summer program for incoming freshman. I called and, even though the credits will be taken over Summer B, they will not count toward the summer requirement. Not sure why, but that’s what I was told.
