Yes, I agree about the 250 hours all in one summer, but he really wanted to get a full taste of private practice medicine in a variety of settings before he went down the premed path, so here we are… He is about to spend a week+ in Houston for a program Rice calls Urban Immersion that involves community service for disadvantage and/or vulnerable population groups. After that, he thinks that his ongoing community service work might be better done and more enjoyable/meaningful in Houston throughout the next four years instead of cramming it into a summer somewhere. This is all new to me so I’m not sure what’s best or if any one way of doing these things is best. I’m hopeful that that premed advisory office will provide direction on how to fit it all in during the next few years. Thanks again for your input and for others who have responded as well.
@phokie I’m curious how I would go about shadowing physicians over the summer if I’m interested. I don’t have any doctors in my family as it sounds like you guys do. Who would I contact to try and find a doctor that would be willing to let me shadow them? is this done through a hospital or more of a private practice kind of thing?
