Summer Before Mudd

What are you guys doing? Building fusion power sources and curing the world of HIV? That's what I thought...

Is there anything at mudd starting AFTER june 13th - classes, programs, etc.? I am looking at boring summer ahead of me after getting rejected from all physics internships. (consider my date options)

Of course I am still waiting for my decisions, growing more anxious day by day after getting accepted to Cornell. Lets just say I am REALLY worried about the over-enrollment and its possible effects on transfer decisions. I certainly have a passion for Mudd, but is it enough to overshadow a 610V score twice?

No, there aren't any summer classes at HMC besides summer math.

Well hopefully then Ill be lucky enough to have nothing (educational) to do for the rest of the summer.

Do a lot of Mudders go to Anime Expo? While I get the chance Im definitely gonna have to hit that up.

Okay to spin off that lost post:

Who the hell sticks acceptances letters in small, normal envelopes? That is cruel, as it nearly ruined my day. Luckily the giddiness I showed the mail carrier was enough to erase all the hurt.

Btw, I might have been wrong about the over-enrollment affecting transfer admissions, it just means I lose guaranteed housing. (yuck!)

Seiken, Does that understated message mean you were accepted to Mudd as a transfer student? Congratulations!

YAY!!!! Seiken is a Mudder! Well, officially anyways - far as I and the folks on this board are concerned, your presence here has made you a Mudder for a long time now.

Ah yes, I was indeed accepted (or readmitted as they call it) as a transfer. With this in mind I will most likely transfer assuming nothing blows up. I still have to worry about money and to a lesser extent the housing situation, which I will deal with tomorrow - I have some theories how to bypass it if it becomes a problem.

As for being a Mudder, I always considered myself a Mudder at heart. Each time (of like 3) I got drunk with my friends at CMC and Pitzer I would get mistaken for one, namely because I would get into drunken arguments about quantum mechanics and possibly go into drunken squaring 4 digit numbers a la Benjamin.

I anticipate there will be at least one room available - the study abroad program is becoming more and more popular, so rooms become available with great rapidity. No promises, but you have reason to be optimistic.

Congrats Seiken le Mudder!!!

Alright, so what is the low-down on South Dorm. It seems thats where they have room for the transfers. The person also mentioned something about sharing bathrooms with (a) girl (s), but not showers (sadness).

What are the pros and cons of South? I am generally a quiet, and somewhat nerdy, person, but I really want to get out, socialize, and be in study groups and all that. I would also LOVE to participate in pranks.

I'm a Southie, and it sounds like from what you described, South is one of the better dorms for you. There are certainly a number of relatively quiet people here (at least relative to the stereotypical Westie or Northie), but since it is an inner dorm, there is inevitably more community than you would get in any of the outer dorms. There is a good social atmosphere going on here (I have good grounds for comparison, having lived in Atwood and Case in addition to South). We also do prank quite a bit.

And a sidenote: South is LOADED with physics majors. It is regularly common on a weekday afternoon to see a bunch of physicists outside on the couch doing problems. So as far as study groups go, for your major I could not pick a better dorm.

Awesome, sounds like everything is falling into place then.

One more thing, I have been working on African Sleeping Sickness for over two years (not HIV, sorry) and was wondering how possible is it to get funded research at Mudd. Rocket (I think) mentioned something about him getting his own lab + budget, and was wondering what it took to get that.

"Rocket (I think) mentioned something about him getting his own lab + budget, and was wondering what it took to get that."

The engineering department is currently in the process of redesigning one of the most important classes for engineers, Experimental Engineering. I have that lab because I agreed to consult for them for a year and so the lab benefits this course and my personal and club endeavors in rocketry. The budget came from the same agreement.

I think you'll have no trouble starting up your own research... as long as you don't require a bunch of specialty equipment that they wouldn't already have in a biology or chemistry lab. I'm sure the faculty would be more than happy to do an independent study in research for your ASS research. :)
