Summer Before Transfer Apps.....

Hey guys just wondering what would be a productive summer before applying as a transfer next year. Should i take a class or two at a college or tutor or work at like a store? Any thoughts would be helpful.

I’m not sure that your desire to transfer should have much effect on your summer activity choice. But to give advice, I’d want to know more about what year you are in, what type of school, how many courses you have, what major you plan, where you stand on prereqs (if applicable), what you’ve done in recent summers, what your financial needs are etc. etc. etc.

Sorry for the 3rd degree ;).

I would suggest you try to squeeze an internship in. It would show commitment to your major or giving back to the community, always a positive thing and a good experience. :)

If you need money just get a job, taking classes will kind of suck. I did summer classes last year and ended up getting burned out. If you can get a paid internship I’d do that.

I am a senior in hs and will be attending nyu in the fall. before you say it is too early to think about transferring i don’t like nyu and it was basically the only school i got into. i don’t need financial aide. last summer i did an internship for a marketing and consulting firm who i still continue to work for doing research. i am desperate to make it to yale, but i am also applying to cornell brown and georgetown. my sat’s are dismal 1870 so i will be studying this summer for the ACT, i cant do those sat’s again. i am in love with yale’s ethics politics and economics program but i am also interested in econ or poly sci. i had a 98-99 avg. for four years i have no ap classes because of family issues but i took college credit classes and 10 honors classes. i was significantly involved in my hs retreat leader clubs community service etc. sat 2s lit and us 670 and bio 560. i hope this is enough info. please help! anyone

My suggestion may sound terse, but it is serious. One very valuable thing you can do this summer is figure out how to not be “desperate” to attend Yale (or any other single school). The chances are slim, even with all of the qualifications. If you do not want to be at NYU as a sophomore (how you would know that already, I can’t imagine), then you will need to apply to other schools than the 4 you have mentioned. They are all reaches, all low transfer acceptance rates.

Your summer activity is not likely to have an effect on your transfer applications. So do what appeals to you.

i know the georgetown app doesnt seem to care much about activities at all. i agree with andale that your summer activities wont affect your transfer app…and i also agree with andale’s first suggestion. NYU is a really cool school and you need to work on getting excited about it and going in with an open mind. you can obviously still prepare to fill out transfer apps…but you need to give NYU a chance. to give you a point of reference, im at cornell, my ED “dream school” from senior year and here I am wanting to transfer. On top of that, I’ll tell you that I think I wouldve had a much better year at NYU than cornell. anyway, my point is just to show you cant really predict how you’ll feel about your school until you go there.

it is also worth mentioning that you need to change your way of thinking bc those schools are veryyy tough to transfer into. they accept very few people and you have basically no room to slip up on your GPA during your first semester freshman year. its a tough prospect.

anyway, cant you just get excited about getting away from home and being in college and living in new york city??? good luck
