I'm a senior this year and I plan to fulfill the Pre-Med requirements when I start college next fall. Does anybody know of any programs/internships/opportunities for students during the summer between high school and college? Preferably in a clinical/hospital setting. Ideally I'd love to shadow a doctor/surgeon, watch procedures, observe, etc. but I know because of confidentiality and liability issues, that these opportunities are rare. Doesn't matter if it's paid/unpaid or what city it's in. Thanks!

I’m not sure if there are that many in a clinical/hospital setting. Usually, summer programs/internships are mostly geared towards research. I’m also not sure of any specific ones, but this link should help: [ExploreHealthCareers.org: Enrichment Program Search](http://www.explorehealthcareers.org/en/ProgramSearch.aspx).

Hope that helps!

I only have advice about this for areas I’m interested in, haha, but i’ll share in case they’re your interest, too!
Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio has a shadowing program.

I shadowed a pediatric oncologist last year and I’m planning to shadow a neonatologist this thanksgiving while I’m in Columbus.
Also, I know that some of their research departments hire high school/college kids. My aunt was a researcher there and I know last year they had a high school student work with them (paid $10 an hour, too!). He got to interpret slides and help with the experiments and stuff, it was very cool.
St Jude’s has a volunteen program over the summer as well, if you’re interested in childhood cancer.

Oh, and you’ve probably heard of this, but I’ll post it anyway!

^I do not recommend that program, it’s a summer camp that’s medically oriented. No true value other than self interest.

If you dont mind what city, Cleveland Clinic has several internship opportunities that involve research and so does NASA (also in cleveland or maybe other cities).

Both involve 40 hour work weeks and I know the Cleveland Clinic one pays about 7.75 but not sure what the NASA pays (but it does pay)

if you live in NY, try out Elmhurst or Mount Sinai Hospital. BOth are decent places.

You should really tell us your city as stated above^^^

i live in phoenix, az but i’m willing to do a program anywhere
