I need a idea of a nonfiction book to read (preferably short and dealing with U.S. History) in which I will have to write on what the author was trying to say throughout the book. Can anyone give me some titles of books and ideas of what the author was trying to say in the books?

Well, a really short book I had to read was "Plunkitt of Tammany Hall" by William L. Riordon.

You could always try "The Petticoat Affair" by Marzack (I think that's the spelling), who was my US History teacher's mentor. I've always loved Jackson, and it's an interesting little study on an obscure topic.

There's "Truman" by David McCollough (sp?) which I'm sure is fantastic. I hear his book on Adams and "1776" are very, very well done.

"The Great Republic" by Winston Churchill is cool and not that tedious.

Would I be able to write a 3 page paper on what the author was trying to say in the book the petticoat affair?

Nevermind I just looked at the topic of the petticoat affair and I wouldn't be able to do that book because my U.S. history teacher is very strict on those kinds of subjects. Are there any short books on U.S. history (maybe the civil war) that has strong opinions. It would be easier to write on if it had strong opinions throughout the book.

Has anyone ever read
Behind Rebel Lines: The Incredible Story of Emma Edmonds, Civil War Spy . I was thinking about reading this book, but I don't get how I will write 3 pages on what the author is trying to say. Can anyone tell me how I can stretch it out that long?

people I need severe help. Any book ideas?????

My Brother Sam is Dead. It's about the Revolutionary War. Then again, my teacher read that book aloud to us in fifth grade.

"The Crucible." It's a play. I forget who wrote it, though.

"The Piano Man". Another play. I think it's by August Wilson or something?

Maybe you can look at your (or another) US history textbook and look up suggested fictional reading.

"The Crucible" is by Arthur Miller.

I hear David McCullough's book "1776" is extremely good.

Do you have a specific time period you have to do? James Bradley's "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Flyboys" are also 2 very good books (about WWII).

Iris Chang's "Rape of Nanking" is also a very good read.

read All the president's men by Bob Woodward & Carl Bernstein, relatively short ~330 , very interesting, very easy to do a 3 page essay on

BTW - i'm using it for my APUSH book report, can anyone explain what an "analytical book review" is?
