I’m taking a summer course at Brown this summer (so excited!). I know colleges look favorably upon that, and I was just wondering whether a college looks any more/less favorably upon you having attended their summer course versus another college’s, or if there’s pretty much no difference.

If I love the campus and the school this summer I think I may apply to Brown ED next year (I’m a junior now).
My GPA is good, 97%… About #15 out of 400 students in my grade… Got a 2230 on my PSAT, still to take the regular… And my SAT IIs average in the low 700s. But my ECs are pretty lackluster for Brown. President of 2 things and Editor of newspaper… Art is a major hobby and I love it, and would like to send in some of my pieces if that’s acceptable/if that could help. I haven’t really won many awards since I’m pretty lame like that. Just minor school prizes and a few county recoginitions for math. I’ve had my poetry published by the America Library of Poetry, and I plan to either volunteer at a local hospital this summer (when I return from Brown) or get a job.
The thing is though, some kid last year from my school with a 1500 SAT, 98% average, rank of #7/400, editor in chief of yearbook, and got to states in debating, and he got rejected from Brown (although into UPenn.) So go figure that. It puts a damper on my chances.
Although I know he didn’t apply ED, so I wonder if that would have made a difference…

Thanks anyone for any advice/guidance.

are you doing the seven week program, or a mini course for fewer weeks? If you're doing a mini course, it will have no effect on your application, because Brown pretty much lets anyone into the Summer@Brown program. The 7 week program is a little different since you take a real Brown class for credit.

Mini-course. I simply don't have the money for seven weeks. Plus I'm going mostly so that I can see how well I enjoy the whole social sciences thing, and to meet some new people and really be independent for the first time. Hopefully I can get a job or volunteer for the remainder of the summer.

i took a mini course at brown and overall i thought i was a well qualified applicant, but i got rejected. so no, i don't think attending a mini-course will help w/ admission to brown.

You mean you don't think it will help with applying to Brown over other schools, or the course just won't matter at all in admissions? Cause I thought in general colleges look favorably upon kids who engage in enrichment programs and other such activities over their summers..

I think it will matter in that it's good that you're doing something with your summer as opposed to sitting around eating cheetos, but it's not a deal-maker at Brown or anywhere else.

Of course. One summer program isn't gonna make or break an application.

I'm just really excited for my course.. My only fear is that I'll fall in love with the class and Brown so much, and wind up getting rejected from Brown next year. =/ Maybe I shall apply EarlyDecision to boost my chances a bit, if I develop a passion for Brown this June and July.

Oh well, I guess time will tell.
