I work at a YMCA summer camp (overnight) for the entire summer as a counselor and Director of Photography. The job pays very little, but I honestly do it because I really love it. I haven't done as much volunteering as I'd like to in high school, just cus I'm really busy with classes, dance, running a couple clubs, being involved in my temple's youth group, etc. Also, I'm currently a junior, but I was hired last year, so this summer will be my second summer. I don't know if it would be worth mentioning in college applications, but I was also the youngest person ever to be hired there, and 90% of the people I worked with were college/graduate students. Do you think this would look as good as volunteering to colleges? The job is very difficult, pays very little (I'm talking about 25 cents an hour), and we work 7 days a week, about 18 hours a day on average. I personally don't think the 'camp counselor' job gets as much credit as it should, but I still don't quite know how to portray this to colleges. Thanks for any advice in advance!

Colleges like to see that you’re responsible and a job shows responsibility.

I wouldn’t put it in the category of volunteering, but if you don’t volunteer, it is definitely a suitable alternative.

You should definitely mention it.

Ok, thanks!
