I've been going to the same summer camp since I was about 12 years old, and this summer I worked at the camp and had a great time. Looking toward the future I really think I want to continue to work at this camp because I had an awesome time doing it. So, I was wondering your thoughts. While this will factor very little into my decision in whether I return another summer to work there, I'm wondering how a summer as a camp counselor looks to colleges? Does it hurt? Does it help? Does it do neither? I'm just looking for your thoughts.

no thoughts at all?

it kind of depends on what type of camp it is

As the poster said above, the kind of camp could have an effect on how much it matters. From my perspective, it is a good EC to put on your list that certainly will not hurt you and will probably help you.

its a regular overnight camp, run by the ymca. hiking, canoeing, kayaking and the like.

I think, whether it helps college admissions or not, you should continue working at this camp. You seem to truly enjoy being at camp. I think colleges will admire working at a summer camp (are you getting paid? or is it volunteer?). Often, colleges just want to make sure you are doing something with your colleges and not just sitting on your sofa watching TV or playing video games. Being a camp counselor often shows maturity and leadership.
Since you love it, go for it!

thanks clinegirl! to answer your question, i get paid, but it ends up being just about nothing, literally less than a dollar an hour because they provide room and board.

My opinion: I think it is more useful for college admissions to be a counselor at a YMCA camp than a fancy every expensive private camp that you went to as a camper. I’d keep it up.

What kind of responsibilities do you have at this camp? That’s what will matter to colleges.

i run a cabin of about 8 boys throughout their days. i sit with them at meals, do an activity with them every morning, go about with them during evening activities, and generally oversee them. also i teach activities to boys and girls of a variety of ages during i guess youd call them class periods.

My two cents, continue being a camp counselor. This is your only chance to have a job like this, once you’re finished with college it’s about being in graduate school or having a real job.

When I was in college I spent one summer working at a summer camp. Some of my friends had internships and I was envious of them at the time but now I see that I was the one who was lucky. I loved that summer, I wish I had had more like it. It was my only chance to do something like that, now with a mortgage and kids I can’t even think about it.

i think im going to go ahead with it this summer. i love it and dont relaly want to stop. just as a curiousity how do you think it looks on a college app?
