I'm a parent, looking for suggestions for a summer chemistry program for a high school student who has taken a few college chem courses. He's considering a math program, but his true love is chemistry. We're relative newbies to the whole summer enrichment thing.

thank you!

Look into the Welch Scholars Program in Texas which is specifically targeted towards students interested in Chemistry.

Alternatively, the prestigious Clark Scholars program is a great option for any area of study including chemistry, mathematics, etc. I am an alum of this program and highly recommend it. clarkscholars.ttu.edu

Thanks Torcher. Clark sounds like a great program, but I don’t know about seven weeks! That’s almost the entire summer. I’ll keep the Welch program in mind- that could be a good fit, though not right away.

I would have to second the Clark Scholars program, being another alumnus. It really is an amazing program. And don’t worry about the time; part of the learning experience comes from living by yourself. For you it might seem like forever, but for him it’ll fly by.

The Welch Scholars were our mortal enemies…

Thanks Proletariat2. Either of you know about anything similar of value on the east coast?

Well, there’s RSI at MIT, but admission is practically a crapshoot.

^ This is true. However, if you call <10% a crapshoot, then Clark Scholars is as well.

BUT, the acceptance rate for Clarks is still significantly higher than or RSI, it’s a more close-knit program which offers its own advantages, and the admissions process is much more humane. There’s another thread floating around listing research and other types of summer programs…

Yeah, scour that list for any that you find interesting. There are a number of summer programs in which your son can do chemistry research. Most of them are free, too.
