I recently signed up to take ap micro and macro economics and ap computer science A over the summer. I planned everything out and realized that I could finish everything. However, after looking over the material, I realized that ap computer science might not be a good idea to take since I dont have any programming experience at all.

main question: Is it a good idea to take this class in about 1.5 months with absolutely no prevous programming experience? Or am i just setting myself up for failure?

last note: Collegeboard says there is no prevous programming experience required for ap comp sci. However, when I registered for the class, the first thing they told me was that " 70% of students who have no previous programming experience may drop or fail this course". Is this class really that hard?

I took APCS this year without any prior programming experience and I was fine (definitely got a 5). I highly doubt that statistic is real and I’m sure it’s just there to scare you.

Now I took the class in school so I can’t comment on the learning programming online aspect of it that much, but 3 APs for the summer (in general) seems very tough. APCS definitely requires practice but depending on how long you spend on the class everyday I’m sure you’d be fine. Keep in mind if someone were to just pick up the Barron’s book and read through it, they’d straight up fail. You need a ton of experience programming hands-on for the class due to the fact the free response (writing 4 programs on paper) is 50% of the grade. The other 50% is multiple choice.

bumpp. I have to decide by this friday

if it’s worrying you this much, you can probably study a bit of programming on your own before the class actually begins

I would say do Macro and Micro over the summer, and take more time on APCS. since you do have until may to finish…

That means 30% don’t drop out or fail, so its not going to be impossible. By the sounds of it, it will just be more challenging with no programming experience, which with two other APs maybe isn’t what you want.

I already planned out the time I will spend for the macro/micro econ course (1 month). I feel comfertable with the econ since I have already taken honors economics. As for comp. sci, many students either tell me its flat out easy or flat out hard. As of right now, I am thinking of dropping apcs

I was actually wondering the same thing. Not about taking it over the summer but the rigor of the APCS itself. By the way, what grade are you in? If you don’t have a very hard schedule the coming school year, you could always take APCS in school. It also depends on your grades. If you are the type of person that can look at something and understand it, you’ll probably do well.
@KingAurora: I’m going to be taking plain computer science next year. Do you think I’ll have enough experience to get a good score/grade in APCS if I choose to take the course the year after?

Im a rising junior. Also, I dont really think I can handle this class next year since I already have so many other AP’s.

I wouldn’t take it. If you’re taking it without prior programming experience, I’m assuming you’re taking it for the AP title. Are you interested enough to take a regular course and then take the AP version later? If not, then I wouldn’t bother.

I mean I am actually interested in programming. The only problem is that I dont have any prevous programming experience. I cant really take a intro programming class next year since my schedule is already submitted and full.
