I know that courses taken at a community college won’t affect your UC GPA but I’m wondering if med schools will be able/ask to view the grades of those courses, thus less than perfect grades on my summer sessions will lower my chances.

Ex: If I take a GE at a CC the summer before I start UCD and I take two major prerequisite/breadth classes summer after my first year, and if I end up with a C in all three classes, will that adversely affect my med school chances? Or will it not because my UC GPA is not affected by courses taken outside of UCD?

From a former UCD Med School Grad: All college transcripts are factored in to the selection weighted along with MCATs for the initial winnowing of the several thousand applications for the 100 or so positions. Remember, just about 5000 apply, 450-500 interview and only 100 are accepted. It was pretty easy to trim the applicant pool down to a manageable level just by looking at grades/gpa’s and MCATs. Then, all the essay and extracurriculars get looked at. Don’t fool yourself, the majority of applications get a cursory look at best if the numbers just aren’t there. Do yourself a favor get straight A’s. don’t give us any reason to round file your application before we even read it. You’d need a pretty amazing excuse, and somehow find a way to get someone on the admissions committee to even pay attention to that excuse to explain away a bunch of Community College C’s.
