Hello, I'm currently a high school freshman and my parents suggested taking summer courses at a local community college. Can someone explain how this would work if I haven't graduated high school yet? I am very eager to take summer courses if this is a possibility.

Check with your HS to see if they will count as dual enrollment, and if the grades are included in your gpa. College courses taken during HS do NOT count towards being considered as a transfer applicant.

If you decide to take college courses, be sure that you take them seriously. When you are applying to colleges as a sr, you will be required to send in a transcript for any college courses you’ve taken during HS. And if you later apply to med school (I don’t know about law or grad school), all college courses, no matter when taken, count in your gpa. In other words, they will be a permanent part of your academic record.

College classes can be a good way to take courses your HS doesn’t offer, advance to higher levels, etc. One of my kids took foreign language and math courses at the local CC and university to supplement their HS academics.
