buuuump more seats added to Fitelson’s intro to logic, all of you phil majors should take it with me!

There is a very very strong chance I’ll be registering for that class soon after I met with a Berkeley rep yesterday. She suggested I sign up even though I haven’t been admitted yet…Maybe it’s a hint. lol jk.

I need an anthro class and an evolution class and intro to logic.

do you think if I registered for a class thats a prereq but its only offered at berkeley and then submitted it as an update to my app it would increase my chances of getting in or do you think it wouldn’t help/wouldn’t matter?

@ corinnejay: I actually did just that, but before my myberkeleyappupdate was due. My counselor told me that if I signed up for those 3 phil prereqs not offered at my school for UCB summer school, it would look like I was very serious and interested in my major and in UCB, itself. I’m not entirely sure if my summer schedule can fully correspond to what I wrote on my app update yet, but it’ll still look solid.

My advice: I would definitely fax them your new “planned information” about summer school. It can’t hurt, and I would imagine that it would help. Give a counselor a call at UCB too, and ask about this.

oh well I’m actually from the bay so I’ll just go over and talk to one in person. You only have to pay 150 initially right? And then if you dont end up taking it they dont give you the 150 back but you dont loose 1,500?

It’s 385 to register, and then 320 a unit after that.

CantabilenApathy, I think i’m in with you =D. Unless of course i don’t get accepted… but that’s not fun to think about.

I registered for that logic class but haven’t gotten the confirmation yet.

I’m so excited!!! I will buy the text book and will do the homework. Oh, and i have a draft syllabus for both the ancient philosophy classes (from the actual teacher) if anyone wants me to send it to 'em so they can get cracking on the reading. Like CantabilenApathy said earlier, the teacher of the first logic class has posted his syllabus and readings and homework on his website.

I’m not sure i have the cojones to take more that one class a session, even if I do read ahead. I’ll still have to re-read a bunch i’m sure, and then there are the writings that i will have to do, and the classes themselves take a bunch of time, which is less time to do homework. I took a summer session class at my ccc. The first week and a half we had 100 pages of Plato to read per night. Now granted, Plato isn’t the hardest philosopher to read, but it ain’t like reading a good fantasy novel. The other weeks weren’t too much better. That summer ethics class kicked my butt. Maybe i’ll sign up for 3 classes and (doubling up 25a or b with logic) and just see how it goes the first week or two ( I forget when the drop deadline is for a refund).

So about updating my app to include courses taken at UCB summer session…

It’s too late to do this on myberkeleyapplication right? So i have to fax this information to them? What would go on the fax? You think it would make me look overconfident? (it certainly makes me feel overconfident =D)

oh, and let us know how that goes corinnejay

@corinnejay- you have to pay it all upfront. you can get some sort of refund depending on when you drop, but you have to pay now. it sucks

@absurdmike- really, what syllabus? what prof? I’m taking 25a second session with Barnes. For ancient philosophy it’s pretty standard reading (Plato and Aristotle), but I’d love a copy of the syllabus, especially if it has stuff like essay prompts or midterm/final info. Barnes was the GSI for the 25a syllabus I have though, so I’d assume the readings would be the same. Mine doesn’t have anything other than the schedule.

AND the answer to my original question- I emailed someone from summer admin, and they said that unless the class was full when I registered, I’m in the class (so I won’t be waitlisted if it fills before I get my confirmation email).

btw- I registered on 2-18-10 and still haven’t gotten my confirmation email. It’s supposed to take up to 2 weeks, and I guess they’re really using that cushion.

Ya, i have one from Barnes. I just emailed him and he sent it to me. It doesn’t have essay prompts, but you might find some useful stuff beyond what you already have.

I haven’t gotten the confirmation either; i think it’s been a week or so. That’s kinda neat they added 30 more seats. They must have seen how popular that class was.

It’s a popular class, and the prof is a bit of a star. He’s still pretty young, but he has a really incredible CV. Also, summer session A is his last at UCB. And I’m sure that other people would much rather take the class from the prof who has everything online already, than the GSI who hasn’t.

Hey guys, so I was on the UCB summer session website checking out some classes that I could possibly register for, and it seems that Cultural Anthropology is only offered starting on May 24th. My semester at my CCC ends after that date…so what should I do? lol.

Also, I’m not quite clear on this whole 6 week session information. If I understand correctly, and please correct me if I’m wrong, these classes are offered for 6 weeks at a time, and there are multiple sessions of 6 weeks each wherein a student can take classes?

I’m pretty confused about all of this, and if you guys could just sort of outline how the summer sessions pan out chronologically, that would be awesome.

If that Cultural Anthro class I need is only offered beginning on May 24th, then I won’t be able to do it. I’m hoping that it’s possibly offered in another 6 week session…maybe?

i just checked… and there are no other Cultural Anthro classes.

There are about 5 summer sessions with varying lengths.

Session Start Date End Date
A - First Six-Week Session May 24 July 2
B - Ten-Week Session June 7 August 13
C - Eight-Week Session June 21 August 13
D - 2nd Six-Week Session July 6 August 13
E - Three-Week Session July 26 August 13

[Schedule | Berkeley Summer Sessions](Schedule | Berkeley Summer Sessions)

However, if you just look for classes on the Berkeley Schedule of Classes, it will list all classes in the summer from all the summer sessions. So when i searched for Cultural Anthro classes in the schedule of classes, and Cultural Anthro only showed as starting May 24, that means it is only offered in the First Six-Week Session.

Fyi I just got my confirmed class schedule, 8 days after I registered.

@ absurdmike: Thank you so much for helping me out! Yeah, I figured I was sort of screwed for Cultural Anthro. I mean I guess I could somehow make it work out with my CCC schedule, but it’ll be difficult. Either way, I’m still highly looking into a phil class and an evolution course. I’ll let you guys know what I end up doing within a few days.

Thanks again!

I just called a summer session representative, and she said that I can sign up for summer classes now as a visiting student.

Then, if I get accepted (crosses fingers), I can change my status to UC Berkeley Student, and they will refund me the difference in cost!!!. That’s so freaken awesome.

I know that sometimes representatives can give you incorrect information, so if anyone has hears or has heard anything contrary, please let me know. Otherwise, I’m registering for more classes today (i already registered for logic when I thought it was almost full. But then they added 30 seats :P)

One question, guys - if I want to take classes at UCB over the summer, would it make sense to wait until acceptances are released to register, or should I register Now??

Check how many spaces are left in your class. I’m going to wait till I get my acceptance since my class still has a lot of space. If your class is about to be/is filled, do it now(as a visiting student).

@edbraga do you happen to have a link to where you can see space availability in classes? I’m searching for it now but can’t find it

EDIT: I found it: http://sis.berkeley.edu/OSOC/osoc?p_term=SU&p_dept=psych

But look at those prices! Will it really cost me $960? Or will it cost me $876? 960 is the “visiting” price, while 876 is the UC undergrad price. By summer I’ll be admitted (if I go there) so I guess it would be the undergrad price? If I’m on financial aid is it cheaper for me? How did you guys who already registered for classes do it - have you had to pay yet?

ya, i’d wait if there are a bunch of seats just because of the inconvenience of switching your status and getting the refund. Also, if you don’t get in, and decide to drop the classes, then you have to pay some drop fee (~100, 150)

But if you need/want to register now, at least you would be refunded the difference in costs if/when you get accepted. (If I end up being wrong about this [and i hope i’m not], get mad at the Cal representative, not me!)

ya, you have to pay up front. The prices are a bummer but they’re still cheaper (by my calculations) than the regular semester. I’m not sure about the financial aid part. I’d be interested to know that too.
