is it okay to take summer classes at another institution- i unfortunately fell behind with the premed track this year, and want to take biology over the summer at my local school

I took my physics course at the local state university over a summer break. our premed committee requires that 75% of the premed courses must be taken at our college, so ONE was my limit. It was no problem with med school applications, just had to send them both transcripts.

In general, taking pre-med summer courses is less than ideal (there's a reason why that committee "wants" you take 75% at your home institution). You should try to avoid it if possible, especially if by "local school" you mean "community college". While it's hard to determine just how much med schools care about this, the important fact is that they do, and it's not a smiley face sticker they're putting on your app.

If you are set on taking something this summer, I'd recommend it being some sort of gen ed requirement (english or a humanities course that will transfer), rather than a pre-med, science requirement.

rofl... I couldn't help but laugh at your "smiley face sticker" metaphor. HAHAHAHA.

A commonly repeated line (by me): Some medical schools flat-out refuse to accept CC credit. Can't imagine the rest are fond of it, either.

so, is it only frowned upon to take pre-med courses at a community college or do med schools also frown upon taking gen-ed requirments?

Just don't take courses at a community college period. If you wanna take a couple of classes over the summer, do so at a 4 year institution.

I think that's the general message being conveyed here

What if I already have my 2 semester requirements of biology and want to take another biology course over the summer? i.e. microbiology, genetics, etc
I don't care about the summer credit being applied to med schools. Its just, I need to finish some of these courses in order to transfer internally from the university of maryland college park to the university of maryland at shady grove, which is 5 minutes from my house rather than an hour and ten minutes at college park.
