What schools have programs that offer theatre classes for college credit during the summer? Do these programs qualify for federal financial aid?

Not aware of any that offer too many because, in most cases, faculty members use the summer to work professionally; but you can use the summer to take core curriculum/gen ed classes. These can be done at your local community college and/or online. Once you are accepted to a college, be sure to fill out the appropriate paperwork at your college before you sign up for summer classes to be sure the classes you are taking will transfer.

Are you looking for a summer intensive for college students, an opportunity to take theatre courses for credit at a college other than the one at which you are currently enrolled, or a program to transfer to that would allow you to take courses towards your major in the summer?

There are summer intensive programs for college students at some colleges, often these programs are for credit. However, the credits may not meet any requirements in your current program.

Some colleges will have summer theatre courses… for example where I teach there are sometimes short courses, or focused study abroad. Students from other universities could likely register for these courses on a space available basis, and earn credit. However, the credits may not meet requirements in your current program.

NYU/Tisch has a program called “Summer in NYC” that offers drama classes for credit. Last summer’s schedule is still up and under “drama” there are some musical classes listed.

classicalbk, are they offered for credit for Drama majors? I ask because that didn’t used to be the case. Those summer courses were for non-majors.

I’m not sure if the OP is interested in schools that offer summer courses, where their own students can earn credits, or what schools in general offer summer courses for anyone. Some schools are particularly picky about granting credit for work done elsewhere. Something to investigate carefully at each school on your list.

On the Tisch summer programs website, It’s not that clear but it looks to me like there’s one list for classes for credit and another list for non-credit classes and there are different selections of courses under each list. The wording implies to me that you don’t have to be a Tisch student to take the classes in the summer.

It unlikely (but not unheard of) that a school will accept theatre credits from another school. They might accept outside theatre credits as electives, however. Never hurts to ask.

I have found a few schools that offer music classes during the summer that look very useful to the MT major, if that’s any help.

If I remember correctly, some dance schools require their students go to school in the summer, so they graduate earlier and younger. Sort of wish MT schools would look into that, myself! :)

Im looking for intensives with college credit to transfer in just as electives. The Tisch program looks interesting. Any others?

Boston Conservatory has a fairly new Musical Theatre Dance intensive, and it says on the website that college credit MAY be granted when appropriate. My D loved, loved intensive director Michelle Chasse’s dance audition class during college auditions.
