Summer College for High School Students

Has anyone attended? My son has been offered a full scholarship to attend. I am wondering whether the courses are only open to the high school students or whether they are open to any student. Also, I am wondering whether they offer any evening or weekend activities other than the optional trips. I guess I'm wondering how much of a "program" it is versus just a university summer school.

SCHS at Ole Miss is a wonderful program. The courses are taken with current UM students. They do provide programming for the students on weekends and evenings. There are counselors hired to assist with the program, many of whom are Honors College students. I hope your student participates this summer!

Hmmm… How large are the classes? He was planning to take computer science and logic.

Just received the brochure and letter saying that my D got a full scholarship to the SCHS, too. She is very excited. My D is interested in attending the theatre classes in the first session which are being offered to high school students for the first time.

We are visiting Ole Miss and the theatre department at the end of April. We’ve visited previously but not for theatre. She is seriously considering attending…

Could you get more information about SCHS? It looks like dh has already bought son’s plane ticket but I’d still like more information about the class sizes etc.

I attended SCHS last summer and the classes typically are comprised of intelligent undergrad and grad students seeking to get ahead by taking summer courses. It is essentially a summer semester divided into two terms. I took business and economics each class was about 15-20 students.

neftali45: which economics class did you take? my D is considering taking “Intro to Microeconomics” … I think that’s the only one listed this year.

If so what’s it like? Lots of homework? Any info would be great!

Thanks!

I took Microeconomics. Typically most universities require Microeconomics as a prerequisite to Macro. The professor is very distinguished I took it with Dr. Matthews. It is a very straight forward class. Oh yes plenty to do. Your daughter or son will really learn practical time management skills as if he/she were already in college. And since it is in the summer semester you don’t have to worry about any wild frat or sor parties since it is a very Greek oriented school. A lot of foreign students participate as well it serves as a good opportunity to broaden your horizons.

I loved SCHS! BEST TIME EVER  The best thing about Ole Miss is the PEOPLE and how much they value their friendships. Do I see a future alumni network?

When I attended SCHS in 2010, the courses I took were Journalism 101 and English 102. Now, Journalism was extremely easy, and I wish that I took a more rigorous course. However, English 102 included more work, but it wasn’t back-breaking. Both classes are taken with undergraduate and graduate students who enrolled in the summer classes.

From what I remember, these were the courses being offered:
Art 101
College Algebra
English 101
English 102
Anatomy and Physiology
Biology
Journalism
Business
Economics
Computer Science
Political Science 101
Speech
Theatre
etc.

Yes! Activities definitely occupied my weekends there at SCHS. There were sometimes required seminars that we had to attend. Also, there were shuttles that took students to Walmart, movies, restaurants etc.

The program also provided us a free trip to Memphis, and we students took a ride on a ferry boat. Great social outing and food. It was splendid.

Apollo, I hope your son comes! Mom, your D too! :)

How structured is the typical day to day? Is it structured more like real college life or a summer camp where every minute is planned?

Also if I drive will I be allowed to use my car during the month?

Most of the activities are in the later afternoon/evening for Summer College. Your day is pretty wide-open since the students are taking actual college classes and they are at various times throughout the day. There are a number of weekend activities to keep students engaged, and there are some travel opportunities. I know that they’ve gone up to Memphis and to Nashville before. Because students in the SCHS program are enrolled as college students, they are (for the most part) treated that way. There are college students hired as “counselors” who live in the hall, but they are there for support and questions and group activities. The counselors don’t wake the students up or anything like that.

It’s a great program that I would highly recommend!

My son will attend. We bought his airline tickets. He will be studying computer science and logic. I wish my older daughter wanted to attend. She will be considering applying for the Chinese flagship and School of International Studies for 2013. She needs to visit sometime but she lives far away and has a hard time getting away from her boarding school.

@Tutu13 It was really laid-back. As collegeguider said, the college courses varied from morning (earliest being 8am) to 2pm (latest). After their classes, they are free throughout the day, but usually, counselors engaged the SCHS people with non-reckless activities.

Ah, I remember going to Memphis and Nashville. Memphis was free, but I think Nashville was $100? Lunch was provided though.

IMO, it’s like college but with just a couple more regulations.

Yeah, you can drive! You have to provide your keys to the counselors and ask for them if you want to leave the campus. No hassle involved.

@Apollo6: That’s great! I’m sure your son will enjoy the program. He should also look into the Barksdale Honors College in addition to Chinese and Croft. My suggestion would be to have him set up meetings with administrators from those areas while he is on campus for Summer College. That could help ease the strain on trying to make another visit. He can get all the information he needs while in Oxford. He can look up email addresses for staff in those areas and/or ask one of the counselors to point him in the right direction.

Actually, it is my 16 yo son who will attend this summer. His 18 yo sister is the one who needs to visit. She will be studying in China this summer so she won’t be able to visit or attend SCHS. We’ll have to find a way for her to visit in the fall so she can see if it is a good fit for her and also audition for a music scholarship.

How do you find the merit scholarship opportunities for Summer College? Does anyone know the stats required to receive one of the academic scholarships?

Wow! What Generous scholarships. Thanks!

Do you know If there are any scholarships for international students?

If you have the scores, I think you get the scholarships regardless of your national status. I think SCHS is a recruiting tool for the University. They hope you’ll love the school so much that you’ll want to come back for undergrad.
