Hi all, I'm an undergraduate student and I'm getting ready to send out applications for summer composition programs. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the competitiveness of these programs. I'd like to apply for some that I feel sure I'll get into, most of these are what I imagine you'd call competitive. Just curious if you're familiar with any of these programs, what your experiences have been, how selective you'd say they are, and also if you know of any other composition programs out there:

I am curious what are people’s thought about New York Summer Music Fesitval for a senior off to college as a compostion major? He was thinking of a session of this combined with one of the one week programs. He is not wanting a longer prgoram this summer. Any thoughts? Thanks,

Check out California Summer Music. John Corigliano is the guest composer this summer, although the deadline has passed. In fact, for most that come to mind the deadlines have already passed - but they might take late entries: Bang on a Can, Aspen, Norfolk, Atlantic, Bowdoin and Mizzou New Music Festival. There are also quite a few European composition programs, if you can afford them.

Thanks so much. I am especially interested in the quality of the composition program. Anyone know? My son will be 18 and college bound for composition/performance major in fall.

My son has been to Brevard, which he liked quite a lot, and to New Music on the Point, which he also liked (but it was much shorter). Some of the programs have undergraduates and graduates in the same program, so they can be pretty competitive.
