Summer courses question

Hey guys,

I've applied to UCSD, UCI, UCB and UCLA

I highly doubt I'm in at UCB or UCLA and UCSD is 50/50. I'm expecting to get in to UCI.

The thing is, I live 30 minutes away from UCSD and I was hoping to take summer classes their this summer, regardless of whether or not I'm admitted in the fall.

Assuming I do this, are those units going to transfer to UCI if I don't get into UCSD? They'd be all upper-division but since I have nothing else to do, I was really hoping I can do this. A friend of mine said he didn't think you can transfer upper division between campuses, but he didn't go to a UC.

Does anyone know what the case is? Or is this done on a campus-by-campus basis to where I'll have to contact UCI about their policy?

Each class is going to be around $1,200 in tuition, so it's imperative that I take transferable classes.

How exactly are you able to attend a college your not admitted to for credit?

You can take summer classes as a “visiting student” without being admitted. The counselor I spoke with at UCSD confirmed this. You just pay a crapload in tuition.

i want to take a summer class as well but really don’t want to pay the crazy tuition price. i wonder if classes will fill up by the time we get our acceptance letters. maybe if we get lucky, we’ll score a seat or two in a class. :(

Yeah dude I’m gonna be out around $7,000 + books for the summer sessions.

It is not a crapload if you live at home (I am assuming you will commute). I believe it comes out to ~$800 per class + book.

Its $290 a unit. That’s $1,160 a class, plus the book, which is around $80 on average. In total, I’ll be over $1,200 per class.

Anyone have an answer??

[Fees-Fees fees](http://www.summer.ucla.edu/fees/fees.htm)

UCLA: approx. $1500 for a 4 unit class…

so darn steep!

If you have been accepted to UCI, you will get the “other UC student” tuition rate. THe rate is 229 a unit (916 for a 4 unit class). Plus you have to pay 143.48 in recreation fees for the session.

1 class= 1059.48
2 classes= 1975.48
3 classes= 2891.48

Multiply that by two and you get your costs for both summer sessions. If you are admitted to any UC you get the UC student rate. If you dont get admitted to a UC then Im assuming you wouldnt go to their summer sessions. This is for UCSD by the way. I went to both summer sessions there last year and this is how it worked. It was cheaper last year though (about 835 a class w/fees).

Heres the link

[Summer Session - Visiting Students - UC Students - Tuition & Fees](http://summersession.ucsd.edu/visiting/ucstudents-tuition.shtml)

I already know all about the fees. That wasn’t my question. My question was whether I can take upper division courses over the summer at UCSD and transfer them to UCI.

i would think so, wouldnt all classes from a UC would transfer over to another UC

if you guys take 4 summer classes total, … wouldn’t that be money well spent? Because, at least you’d take off a quarter! lol. So it’s not like you spent all this unnecessary money just for one class you know? YOu’re gonna have to spend it (or not) for regular terms anywhoo

Money is not a concern of mine. I just need to get done as soon as possible. I’m hoping to take 24 units in the summer (two sessions, 12 units each) and then average 20 units per quarter. That would leave me 8 units shy of graduation, which I could take next summer.

But I need to know if upper division courses will transfer between UC’s.

Grimes:

First, I wish you best of luck completing 24 units in the summer sessions. 3 upper division classes in 6 weeks will certainly be a challenge. I know someone who’s done it in the past (biochem major), so it’s doable, but be prepared to study study study for 6 weeks straight.

Second, unless the classes you want are filling up quick, I would just wait until you hear from what schools you get accepted to. Tuition would be cheaper also.

@ grimes: why do you want to rush it?

the classes will transfer. the CA public schools were set up so the units are easily transferable.

rpicton: I have no problem putting in whatever time is necessary/living at the library for 2 months.

I can’t even sign up for summer courses yet, they don’t open up registration until April I believe. Thanks!
