Summer Courses

Hey, when can we start enrolling in summer courses? And is there like a tele-bear-esque (higher classmen get higher priority) style type of enrollment?

Thanks!

Nope, it’s open enrollment. Last year it started beginning of February. Can’t imagine it would be much different now. Check though, and register early because some classes fill up fast, so take advantage of open enrollment–it’s how underclassmen can get to take that class they really want/need without wasting a phase I slot they may need on something else.

Highly recommend summer courses–summer in Berkeley is often more fun than going back home for the entire summer, it’s flexible (you can take the first/last six week session), very helpful in staying on track/getting ahead academically, and I personally like the compressed system…nice change of pace, taking one or two classes at most isn’t that difficult, no matter how few weeks you have.

Lots of humanities majors I know take two classes a six-week session, ending up with 8-16 units over a summer, without really overworking themselves at all. Doesn’t work if you’re taking Chem classes or whatever, though.

really? 8 units is doable in 6 weeks? I’ve been debating doing this, has anybody taken Phil 25a, 25b, or 12a during the summer, and would combining 2 of them be overkill?

are there decal courses in the summer?

no decals in summer

Is there somewhere where I can check the exact date? Thanks a lot for all the information!

“Enrollment opens February 1 for UC students and February 16 for visiting students.”

[Berkeley Summer Sessions](About Summer Sessions | Berkeley Summer Sessions)

the one problem with summer sessions is, if you pick session C, which most do, you will be leaving for Berkeley literally one week after your quarter system friends get back home. This means you won’t be able to see your friends very much.

Generally, I think session A is the best one to do. That way you get back home a week or two after quarter system people and you can chill with your friends.

are summer classes expensive? How much are they on average?

I’m thinking about taking CS61B

I think they are usually around $300 per unit.

has anyone taken chem 3a/al/3b/3bl over the summer and recommend/not recommend it? any advice?

if you are taking Chem 3A+L this summer, do not take anything else with it.

Physics 7B and Linear Algebra doable together?

anyone know anything about how finaid works for summer session?

yea i wasnt planning on taking anything else with it, but is it harder/easier than during the school year? is it frowned upon to take lab courses at a community college?

^for medical school, I am not sure CC would be a good idea

For graduate school, chances are taking 3A at CC would have not effect (but it would be a lot cheaper)

7B and 110 seem like a lot. If you did well in 7A and 54, then you could do it. It probably wouldn’t make for a lot of free time, but it’s doable.

is taking another class with Bio 1A/1AL over the summer a bad idea? (possibly physics 8b?) eh… I know that sounds terrible…

That is suicidal.

definitely do NOT take another class with 1A/1AL. i actually don’t recommend taking that class in the summer at all unless absolutely necessary. one of my friends did it and absolutely hated it. one lab a week is more than enough for the school year, but two a week to cram/memorize is just too much.

ok ok… I guess you’re right, I shouldn’t even think about taking another course w/ bio 1A/1AL… the only reason is I didn’t want to be overloaded in fall next year, but I guess it’s the only way.
