<p>What kind of choices are there for the summer cruises, or do midshipmen even have a big choice?</p>

<p>You have some choices. Not sure what they are these days, but back in my day you had YP cruises, SWO cruises, Yawl cruises, attack submarine cruises, boomer cruises, tours with USMC, SCUBA school, Airborne school, SERE school, and a few others.</p>
<p>As always, class rank was important and the guys at the top got to pick first.</p>
<p>Third class summer
In the summer between your plebe and third class years, you will report to Navy ships and submarines around the world. You become part of the crew for three weeks, taking part in drills, gunnery exercises and standing watches underway. This experience gives you first-hand knowledge of the daily routine of the Navy at sea. You also learn to appreciate the talents, responsibilities and perspectives of enlisted men and women you will later lead as officers. Additionally, you will spend three weeks as part of the crew on a 44-foot Naval Academy sailboat open ocean sailing in the challenging environment on the Eastern seaboard.</p>
<p>Second class summer
During the summer before your second class year, you are introduced to every major branch of the Navy and Marine Corps. In one action-packed summer, you fly Naval training and operational aircraft, dive in a nuclear-powered submarine and patrol, infiltrate and attack mock enemy positions with the Marine Corps. Additionally, you will go to sea for three weeks onboard USNA Yard Patrol craft to various New England ports honing your seamanship and navigation skills.</p>
<p>First class summer
In the final summer, you get the chance to put your leadership skills to the test, both in the fleet and at the Academy. For three to four weeks, you join an operational unit, and this time your duties are those of a junior officer. Depending on your career interests and qualifications, you can choose a surface warship, submarine, aircraft carrier, aviation squadron, or an EOD mobile unit. You may also spend time training with the SEALS in Coronado. Those midshipmen interested in choosing the Marine Corps after graduation may attend a four-week training course in Quantico, Va. Selected midshipmen may also participate in a four-week internship in a wide variety of disciplines. You will also be part of the Plebe Summer Detail, Weapons Detail, NAPS Detail or hold a leadership position on a YP or sailing cruise.</p>

<p>Not all will do the Sailing Cruise, now some will do a three week Yard Partol Cruise.</p>

<p>My Plebe said that they can put in for either the YP's during the 3/C summer, or CSNTS which is the Navy 44's. The Navy 44s, are crewed by 3/C Midshipmen and led by 1/C and 2/C Midshipmen, USNA Faculty, Staff or Civilian volunteers to various ports up the east coast for two-week long training blocks. </p>
<p>They also have the option of a leadership billet for Summer Seminar. Those Mids have already been chosen. For the sailing and cruise blocks,the Mids are just finding out which they will be doing. The Plebes also officially pick their majors this week.</p>
<p>Additionally, Weapons Detail consists mostly of rising 2/C MIDN (coaches). Weapons Detail is led by 1/C MIDN (safety and admin).</p>
<p>I also think they did away with mini-BUD/S (SEALs) program. Furthermore, NAPS detail is manned by O-1's (TAD).</p>
<p>Sailing Detail (BST, Basic Seamanship Training) AKA plebe sailing is ran by rising 2/C MIDN.</p>
<p>This summer I also heard that they were adding a sailing cruise on the west coast. My son is going to be on a sub and go on the sailing cruise. It would be pretty cool to have the sailing be on the West coast.</p>
<p>Weapons detail is a hoot. I did that my 2/C summer and had all kinds of fun.</p>
<p>How is the summer divided? ie. at usafa, there are three - three week periods, two of which are ops, etc, and one of which is leave</p>
