So far there has been discussion on what people are doing for summer, but are there any other people who haven't secured the kind of opportunities others have?

Looking over this forum it's really easy to feel like a failure. I've been shooting out those applications and I am not picky (just need to be able to get there), but no dice so far. I want to work more than anything but the local economy is depressed and the jobs have not been forthcoming.

Now that I'm waiting to hear for an amazing opportunity that I am almost certain I won't get after such a long string of rejections, it got me wondering. Are there others on this forum who are in a similar situation, or does everybody here have some kind of swanky internship or summer research opportunity?

Plans fell through for me. Just chilling at home now. Can’t really get a job because a.) my brother took the car, and b.) I can’t drive the car even if I had it. (No license.) Not to mention my school let out insanely late (just last Friday), so all the jobs are already taken by all the students who were let out, uhhh, five weeks ago.

Oh well. Lots of time to read and do other stuff.

No summer jobs left, I don’t have a local drivers license/phone number so no one wants to hire me, and I got here too late for summer classes.
So mainly I’m improving my cooking skills, watching foreign films, and reading classic books.

Fail summer here too. I tried looking for a summer job, but i get rejected no matter what summer job i try to apply in. What i did to make my summer productive is i enrolled in dance classes. I guess instead of earning money this summer i ended up spending.

Yeah I’ve noticed that my friends who are applying for jobs are having trouble or are making minimum wage doing menial labor. People who are making money and learning skills/getting experience for their resume are only there through connections. Like my friend is making 15/hr at a private equity firm bc his mom knows someone there

Disappointed with my summer also. I am taking a summer class but I have yet to find a summer job. Next summer I might stay at school instead because of my current situation.

Didn’t get anything. I applied to a ton of companies. I mostly just sit at home and either read math books or play video games. I’ve been learning a lot by reading on my own though. I also decided to start studying for the subject GREs.

I kind of wish I could work at Wal-Mart. Nowhere in my college town drug tests (lots of independent stores), so I thought my hometown would be the same. Nope…and now I can’t work at any big companies :(

hyperJulie, good luck with the interview! And just so you know when they call you back for a “2nd interview” it is just to tell you that you got the job and that you have to go pee in a cup. I felt weird about peeing in a cup when I was dressed all nice for what I thought was an actual interview. Haha

Haha, thanks for the tip! Man, peeing in a cup gives me serious performance anxiety. That has me wondering how the hell my aunt ever got a job there though. Pretty sure she’s on crack.

And yeah, summer classes are pretty expensive. I’m taking a 3 credit online course and it cost me about 500 dollars. I needed to take the course to be able to graduate on time with my math minor so it wasn’t a big loss. The fact that I’m still going to graduate on schedule after transferring and switching majors twice is enough of a miracle for me. :D
