Planning ahead, my son may decide to live in Austin the summer following his freshman year (in order to get residency status). Is it pretty easy to get an apartment for those three months or so? Do you know what a place close to campus might run? Thanks!

are you sure you can get residency that way? i didn’t think it worked like that.

You can’t get an apartment for three months near campus - everything is one year lease. Unless you sublet from someone.

You will have to do private dorms, the school dorms or co-ops.

The Castilian is $1500 for all summer, $800 for one session.
Co-ops (collegehouses.org) run an average of $1400ish total (there is a $300 deposit).

I am not sure about the Towers or Dobie.

UT costs $2600 for the whole summer, $1400 for one session. I don’t live on campus anymore so I don’t know if the deadline for that has passed or not.

It does work like that if they have one of the requirements (property, business, job or marriage).
Yep, I spent a lot of time on the phone with the woman in charge of checking residency. Nobody believes me when I tell them, though. Thanks for the link, twizzlers. My parents already own a couple of duplexes in Austin, and they’re going to add my son on to the deed. He can definitely count his freshman year towards residency. Whoo hoo! A $20,000/year savings for three years isn’t bad.

twizzlers, thanks for the dorm info, too! I will keep that on file. This is for the summer of 2011, so we have plenty of time. We’re not even sure yet that our son is going to UT - we’re just gathering information at this point. He got a full-tuition scholarship to a little school in Pennsylvania (Susquehanna), but he’d rather attend UT.

Wow, twizzlers, you get the star for the day. I just checked out the co-op site. It looks ideal for my son. Cheap, 17 meals per week included, and stocked fridge available 24/7. We’re thinking we’d have him stay in an on-campus dorm his first year, then switch to Taos starting the following summer. If he can save $5,000/year on room and board alone, it makes UT not as much of a long shot for him. :o)

If the coops are full, check Craigslist for sublets in May. Most of the apts. near campus only offer 12 mo. leases, so lots of students are very eager to sublet.

Thanks, zlc!

agree. Sublets are plentiful. Many students want to leave in the summer and have 12 month leases. Very easy to find a sublease and negotiate a cheap deal. Many of my d friends are subletting this summer at a fraction of the rent.

You can live on campus for the summer. Find out here: [Division of Housing and Food Service - Summer!](<a href=“UHD Homepage | University Housing and Dining”>UHD Homepage | University Housing and Dining)

And, BTW, If you are a continuing student you do not have to be enrolled in summer school to live on campus.

Thanks, UTHousing! I never knew that you could live on campus if you weren’t taking classes! Interesting.

Holding a deed to property in Texas, and few other things, like getting a utility bill, and not being a dependent, etc. for a year prior can bring down tuition costs for oos students who want to make Texas their residency.
